For those of you who don't know, AIC's guitarist used to record six rhythm tracks total, with three on the left and three on the right. One was all treble, one was all mids and one was all bass. Are there any advantages to this technique versus just using three cabs and/or three mics at once?

I know Jerry would lay down a lot of tracks, and then cull all the wrong ones at mix time. This is an interesting approach. EQ adjustment by track volume. :D

If you did all these with different takes of the same part you'd have some serious fatness happenin'. Much more complex than any chorus box.

I'll often do something similar by recording the same part 2 or 3 times with radically different tones, and/or mic placement.
