HI all,

I was just wondering if anyone uses outboard compressors and equalizers with the BR1600. As of right now, I'm just using the onboard compressor and equalizers, and it's working fine for me. Just curious to see what everyone else is doing.

Hey Radiohead,
I don't use any outboard effects with my BR1600, because I don't have any. However so far I find the effects onboard the BR1600 to be serving me well.

Out of curiosity when using the effects onboard do you enter into PROGRAM for the effects, this gives you a little more control over your settings and the type of each particular effect being used. eg Equalizer: Peak or Shelving, or what particular frequency band you want to target in your highs, mids and lows and the amount of cut or boost to apply.

I was chatting to another BR1600 user and he was not aware of all the adjustment available on the BR1600's effects.

program setting

I've just started learning about the program settings. So far I've been tweaking the knobs on the comp, eq, and pan section with more than acceptable results. About two weeks ago I found out that I could change the equalizer from type to another, and that just about blew my mind. I guess it pays to read all the way through the manual, eh? :-)

well if ROland put them on there...wouldnt it be VERY stupid if you couldnt adjust them LMAO :D I'm a 2480 user...and use both onboard and outboard gear. 1600's a good unit!

I got the VS2000 but I had the 1600.

If I were rich I would own both.

The 1600 is a very well done machine. Much easier to use than the VS2000 but not as many features.

Like I said, which I owned both.

I also owned the BR-1600 and "upgraded" to the VS-2000. Really miss the ease of use of the 1600, but the VS-2000 does have better effects (and the ability to run plug-ins and record at 24bit).

Here's my advice on the 1600. Don't record with eq or compression. Record dry and if you can afford it use outboard preamps. I found the compression algorithims in the mastering tool kit completely hit or miss. Sometimes the right preset made the recording sound real good, other times no amount of tweaking would make it sound right. Definitely burn your mix to CD and compare it to the compressed/mastered version. Consider sending your CD out to a mastering house. I can tell you that I had a few of my recordings mastered by a guy who knew what he was doing and he really managed to get things sounding better than they did using the 1600's mastering presets. Still, it's a great machine, I think.
