Outboard Gear? Is it necessary?

Well I am pretty sure we can get you going correctly with the stuff you own. I too come from a history of screwdrivers, patchbays and soldering irons. I know an app that was made for people like that where you can input monitor with fx just fine

The way I'm running it with analog gear works just fine for me. Why overtax my CPU when I don't have to? I appreciate your effort, though, really.

Hi Pipe,
respectfully, are you trying to convert Mad's set-up (which happens to be, as I'm understanding it, conceptually the same as mine).??
Pipe, seems you and I (as I'm hearing it), are pretty similar in tech background history, but there is no way I could ever go back to an ASIO system, or anything like it....
I'm guessing that Mad's 'mon system' is being driven/assigned by the desk, routed to wherever/whoever wants the particular signals, all in real-time... he can also and probably uses a TB system supplied by the desk and assign that to any particular muso with cans on.!!...or not!..lol.

Versatility, Tactileness, real-time mon, real-time config/routing, true ZERO latency and all them flashing lights are almost impossible to budge from.!!!!

I can't even hear the difference in the sound-quality of an ITB mix or outboard mix..(and I'm not deaf)...lol....(if anything, I can hear the 'sharpness' of an ITB mix done poorly.....and the muddiness of an outboard set-up if done incorrectly.)...(mmm...does that make sense?)...lol.

Anyways mate, just here for chats and info, and if we were in the pub together would be happy discussing this with you in a friendly atmosphere over a beer or 5...with Mad's and the rest of the bods here!!...be good fun I reckon, and then the strippers would come out!!...yaaaaay!

Cheers!

He can use what he wants, I just wanted to point out that there really shouldnt be an issue in getting input monitoring and fx working nowdays

dont let THAT not be a reason to use plugs

Outboard gear is only necessary if you want that sound. Unfortunately, a lot of people want that sound and it is hard to duplicate ITB.

Work with what you can afford. If you don't like the results, then you can buy the outboard.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

and that's why these forums would be nothing without people like you offering their wisdom, experience and thoughts...;)
Rock-On!

You are quite correct in all your assumptions! And as I said before, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

But you conveniently ignore my point about not overtaxing the CPU if I don't have to. I'd much rather that the computer is capturing the sounds than giving the vocalist some "comfort 'verb." Grok?

Oh sure

just like sm57 and d-112 sound the same

"flat sound"? Does that mean "accurate"? If so then yeah, I hate it so bad when something does *exactly* what I tell it to. I would so much rather it does some random shit

+1

pipe, i love you :p

overtaxing?

maybe if your pc is more than 2 years old -- but anything sooner than that, and i think slapping a cheap reverb on a track for input monitoring after a cheap compressor is a small task for even an involved project.

Oh, please shut up.

Our 48 input system uses a p4 2.4ghz. That should be enough for a few verbs and a LOT of compressors, a few guitar amp sims and such.

is that the only refutation do you have?

nice.

How about this - FUCK YOU!

Maybe you have boatloads of money but I don't. I do well with what I have.

Goodnight and goodbye. Welcome to my ignore list, jason.
