I currently record all my stuff with the fostex 8track FD-8. I mix down to an old aiwa DAT, and want to start making CD's of my mixdowns. I'm thinking I should buy an outboard CD burner, figuring I don't use my PC for any of my recording, why start with burning CD's. Would like to hear any advice on outboard burners as opposed to internal PC burners, and brands and models that are affordable and good. I've been looking at phillips, but heard the Sony was better. My DAT has a SPDIF digital out, so a model with both optical and SPDIF ins would br great. Thanks for your time.

If you have a way of digitally getting audio into your computer, you're gonna save quite a bit of money by getting a cd burner for your pc. Heck, you may be able to get an Audiophile and a cd burner for less than a stand alone unit.

Thanks for the info elevate. I have an old crappy sound card with a micro in. But if you really think it would be cheaper, it may be something to look into. The stand-alone Tascam CDRW 700 is going for 500 or so. So what else would I need besides the burner for the PC and a better sound card? Excuse my ignorance, but what's an audiophile? Thanks for your time.:)

You're looking at spending $500 for a cd burner? Ouch. The Audiophile is a soundcard from M-Audio. It has RCA S/PDIF connectors, which would allow you to transfer the audio from your DAT to your computer. There's also the M-Audio DiO 2448 which has RCA and optical S/PDIF connectors. The DiO goes for $100 and the Audiophile goes for $180. You can get one of these cards and a cd burner for your pc, which will run you around $100, and save yourself up to $300.

Wow. Sounds like the burner for the pc is the way to go. I know you need software to burn cd's, is there one that you know of that is more reliable than the rest? Also, do I need a brand new PC to do this? I only have 64 MB of RAM, and about 4 gig of free hard drive space. Is there any brand of CD burners you prefer? I really appreciate your input...:)

i like how your name makes the page go left and right.
I wish I had done something like elevate said. I got a standalone and like what it does. Just a consumer grade Philips.

Most cd burners nowadays come with burning software, and it's usually Nero, which is what I find works best. Your computer should be fine for cd burning, just set burn speed to something slower, like 8x - you can experiment with this. Plextor makes the best cd burners, period, and consequently they are the most expensive. CDR's are so cheap though, that the occasional coaster is not that big of a deal, so I bought an Aopen CDRW and saved myself $40.

Another upside to doing something like this is that you can tweak your mixdowns a little with a wave editor (since you have the songs on your computer) - fix the eq a bit, set the levels, etc...

hmmm... almost like mastering the final mix a bit. Is there specific softare for this, or is it included with the software for the burner?Definately going to go with a burner for the PC. Just have to decide which burner and which sound card to get. I looked into the audiophile, some of the consumer reviews scared me a bit though. Please le me know about this wave software. And I'm assuming the nero software takes care of turning the digital signal from the soundcard to a wav file so it can be burned?....
thanks for your help....

1) Yeah, a simplified version of that....
Please, no flames... ;)

3) Nope, I don't think that it is included with NERO or CD CREATOR. :(

But....
I might be wrong.

7) Yes, it does the conversion from WAV. or AIFF. to CDA. for you. :D
