Old reel to reels, if they're in good shspe, are quite a find! You don't need anything more than the basics before you're ready to push record.

Otari is a quality manufacturer, still in business today.

The basics: Is the headstack in good shape? Does it need lapping? Is it playing back well on all 8 tracks? if not, you may need to have the head adjusted by someone with experience in doing such things. Have you found a source for tape?

From memory, the MTR-60 was one of Otari's first (if not THE first) tape machines for pro recording use (they'd previously been into duplication). I was once told that the MTR stands for "Master Tape Recorder".

I don't remember a great deal about it--the place I worked that had one replaced it with something newer soon after I joined--but AFAIK, it worked well and was built like the proverbial brick shit house.
