is $240 for an original MD421 from my local shop a deal????

And.......given that I have:

1 sm57
1 pv535
2 ecm8000's
1 v93
1 nt3
1 re20 (currently sent for repair)
and some junky mics........

......would this add much to my closet???

I mean is this a complimentary or useful addition?

I have heard that the 421 is good in any situation you might put an sm57 but has more detail.
Is this an accurate description??

How good is the condition?

For $240 it'd have to be in excellent or mint condition to be worth that. BTW, make sure whether or not the clip is included.

They have more high end response than a '57.
If it's financially comfortable, by all means snag a 421.
It's one of the best dynamic microphones ever.
(like your RE20)

So is 240 a bit much??????

I'd almost rather focus the money for better mic pre's (see my thread in the RACK) but I know this mic is a classic.

I just happened to spot it in the used list.
I havent seen it yet.......wont till wednesday.

Is there any mic you might suggest to fit a niche or fill a gap in my modest but slowly growing closet?????

Thanks for the input BTW.

Sounds a bit expensive. Is it a gray 60's version. They go for a bit more because they are collectable. I bought my MD421U5 used for $150 with the clip. Check ebay and you'll find most of the basic 421's go about that price.

I bought mt 421 in 1982-4. I forget exactly. It is a black one. I have'nt used it for years. Is this one of the "good" ones?
Anybody know?

I got an MD-441 for the same price in "mint condition". I don't think its a particularly good deal, but a resonable price if it is in "like new" condition".

Any 421 made before the current MKII is a "better" one IMHO.
(MKII is still "good")

In excellent shape, they tend to go for $200+ on e-bay.
A dropped one might be missing some high end.

FZ, sounds like you've got about $400+ to play around with,
if you don't get that pre on the other thread.
You could hit GC at their sale this weekend and try to score two
DMP3's for $119 (Memorial Weekend sale price).
If you don't need the wide cardiod pattern of a 421, the Beyer
Soundstar X1N tends to go for a bit less $$.
