I am new to the keyboard world, but recently have become interested in adding a new dimension to my demos and songs. I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheap, sub-300, keyboard that would suffice for an alright organ sound. Its just something to learn and play with, but a funky organ sound is a must. Thanks for the replies.

Farfisa, Pipe, Hammond or Vox?

What exactly are you looking for?

I am looking for a Vox sound. Any ideas?

There are a couple decent Vox type sounds in the Alesis QSR.

There's also the "Ham & Eggs" sound and the "Surf Organ" sound in some older Yamaha FM boards.

I made many very passible Vox Jaguar and Continental sounds with my Roland JX-8P before I got a real Jaguar. Of course, the JX dosen't come with those as presets, I had to make them myself.

If you aren't using it live, there's an excellent 30-dollar softsynth called the ComboSister than emulates Vox, Farfisa, and some cheap hammond rip-offs. It's boss.

You could also get the Native Instruments B4, and the additional tonewheel set, which will give you excellent B3, Farfisa, Vox, and Harmonium sounds, all under $300.

Unless you want a real organ (you can probably find a super continental or farfisa fast8 [get a red one!!] for about 350) or you wanna purchase a board with a bunch of stuff you dont really want, VSTi's are the way to go.

Glad to see some other combo-organ lovers! What type of music do you do?

eh

yeah, vsti's are nice, but i need something to use in my band. I think i found something that will suffice until i can afford to move up to a nice workstation. Thanks for all the help.

By the way, i play a mix between Greenday and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, if that makes any sense. Ha... Its good music...

Thanks again!

Slightly different from what you are looking for is the otherwise piece-o-crap Korg X5(D). It has some deceptively wonderful tonewheel organ sounds and can be programmed for the cheese organs of the 60's/70's.

They can be gotten for $200-$300.

Of course, with tonewheel sounds you need a real rotary speaker to move air around...
