what do you all think of orange....

I've actually heard really good things about their 15w tiny terror amp.. which is rediculously affordable..and apparently usable in every situation not just as a practise/recording amp like i had originally thought. i've always had a real soft spot for orange.. I'm thinking about a orange rocker 30 (either combo or head and 2x12) but now i'm thinking i should give this tiny terror a try too..

hrmm

damn amp shopping.. there's too many choices.. in the end it'll probably still be a twin.. but damn orange makes a good amp..

You can't go wrong with an Orange. Every one I have played in a variety of styles has worked very well. Not the ultimate Fender clean but usable. I just think of Badfinger when I play through the larger ones.

I haven't really been able to use an Orange amp other than the Tiny Terror, but I can assure you that every band I've seen that plays Orange amps usually gets a really good sound.

As far as the Tiny Terror goes, I don't see any real reason in having one unless your wanting more clean headroom or volume than an Epiphone Valve Jr. I don't feel that it's worth $500.

It is most definitely worth the price. If I had the need for more volume, I'd just buy two. The TT has become my dirty amp of choice.

I posted a link in the mp3/mixing section for a tune that, although it is poppy, is all TT through a 1960A (with a Telecaster). Here it is again, if you care. It also does the straight rocking out kind of thing, too, and I can post some dry recordings if you want to get a sense of that.

I can't help but describe it as crisp, warm, and smooth.

EDIT: One other advantage over the VJ is that you can pull down the gain and crank the output, running on a clean preamp with power tube distortion even at talking-over-the amp volumes.

I had a buddy who's been playing for years call me one day and ask if I could recommend a good amp. He was stuck on either Mesa or Marshall. Now I don't play guitar but he knew I had recorded tons of good amps and that I also had a "thing" for guitar amps. I knew what his style was very well and had previously heard recordings done with an Orange Rockerverb 50 and I recommended he try that before anything else. Well two days later he talked me into taking him to a small boutique shop that had them in stock and all I could say was "WOW!!!" over and over again. I'm sure it's not the be all end all amp but it sure did make my balls tingle. So yeah, Orange stuff sounds incredible.

interesting, i have seen a lot on the internet and in magazines about the tiny terror. i was in a boutique shop today and saw one, i want one really bad.

ive been jumping back in forth on what to buy first, guitar or amp first.

will the tiny terror produce distorted sounds as well as cleans? i mainly want one for distortion. i dont play live, only for recording. i would use my acoustic amp for cleans and the orange for distortion.

That's the ticket. My TT is my dirty amp...I run a Fender for cleans. Pair the TT with a good cab and you will be amazed. There are only two preamp tubes, but it is my understanding that the preamp utilizes each tube twice in the gain staging, as in four gain stages. I'm no tech, though, so I can't tell you more than that--and it may be bogus.

This amp does have a lot of gain, though. And to top it off, it's simplicity is even more of a plus. There is an excellent sweet spot between preamp and poweramp overdrive, and the amp is plenty loud without being unreasonably so.

what do you run for speakers? i was thinking of getting the orange cab i saw there with it.

my acoustic amp is a fender hahaha. ive played many guitars through it, and i love the cleans it produces with an electric, better than any other fender in that price range that i have used.

I run the TT into a stock Marshall 1960A with G12T-75s. I actually like the upper midrange bump from these speakers, though when I tried the amp out I used an Orange 4X12 with Vintage 30s.

If you buy the Orange 1X12 cab that they sell with the TTs, inspect it big time. They used to make them in England and put a V30 in there, and now they are built in China and use a different 100-watt speaker...it's a G12K-100. I don't mind the G12 speakers in a 4X12, but the V30's low end may be necessary for any balls in a 1X12 cab. Anyway, there was a rumor over at the Orange Amps forum that Orange had a hiccup in their speaker order and got a bunch of 8-ohm speakers instead of the 16-ohm ones they should have gotten. Because of demand, they built a bunch of 8-ohm cabs. Make sure you check that out before frying your TT's output tranny.

The TT really sings with a big cab, but I can understand if you want a smaller one. I'm tempted to get the 1X12 myself for rehearsal and smaller gigs.

If you want to hear some samples, let me know. I can try to record a couple when I am at home tonight or tomorrow.

yeah that would be awesome, thanks man.

no rush either, just let me know when you get some down.

i was leaning towards an ac30, but ive wanted an orange since before i could even plauy a guitar

The tiny terror is a killer lil' amp. The Rockerverb 50 is one of my all time favorites. As long as it has tubes in it if it's from Orange you can dial in something that sounds good.

hey thanks for all the input!

see if I go this route i'm gonna go with the tiny terror and the 2x12 orange cab.. it'll end up costing just as much as the twin in the end.. does that sound rediculous??

the other guitaris in my band plays with a traynor amp.. (the black one.. 30 watts i do believe) will I be able to keep up with him??

i guess the good thing is I could always save up and buy the rocker 30 or the reverb rocket 50 in time and i'll already have the cab. I just want to get a killer sound..

btw i'm playing an american tele with this.. and will be using some pedals (line 6 delay and whatnot)

the twin is amazing but i'm thinking I can get a more unique sound that i'm after with an orange amp.

OK, here goes. Excuse any crappy playing, as I just plugged in and played. I can get you a picture of mic placement, but basically I used an SM58 copy at the edge of the cone, facing the area between the cone and the dust cap. The cab, as said before, is a stock Marshall 1960A. I miced the top left speaker, if anyone cares.

All of the clips were recorded with the amp on the 15-watt setting using a stock 2003 Highway 1 Telecaster (bridge pickup). The tone is always at 11:30 because I like it at noon but the Tele is a bit bright. The volume was a decent talking-to-mild singing level, so there isn't a lot of power tube crunch with the single coils. If I can get it a little louder later this week (I'm in an apartment), I will get you some clips with that, too. These are just preliminary examples. I can do more if anyone wants, and use different guitars. Sorry, I don't currently own any guitars with p-90s or Dearmonds. P-90s really sing through this amp, though. Also, 192kbps is the most I really care to use.

Clean Volume 1:00 Tone 11:30 Gain 9:15

Warm Volume 10:00 Tone 11:30 Gain 12:00

Hairy Volume 9:00 Tone 11:30 Gain 2:00

Gritty Volume 9:00 Tone 11:30 Gain 3:00

Gain Cranked Volume 9:00 Tone 11:30 Gain Cranked

Humbucker Music is really cool.
That's actually where I tried the Tiny Terror.

I just moved from near there to here in Maryland and wish I would have tried out the other Orange amps they have before I left. I've got some phobia about being too loud in music store though. haha.

the tiny terror is a cool little amp. the one i tried was sitting on top of the 112 vintage 30 cab. i was surprised at how big the thing sounds. works very well with a strat.
