is there any way to use the digital out to mixdown to a computer? What kind of cable does it require? the owners manual doesnt say shit about it. I dont have a dat or minidisk or anything to mixdown to, and using the analog outputs and going through the soundcard degrades the sound quality a little too much.

The digital-optical output is meant for a cd burner.
I used it to do multiple mixes of a song on a rewritable cd.
I don't think there is any way to go straight into a computer with it.
Don't you have a SCSI port on that BR-8?

There are converters available that will accept an optical S/PDIF output from your BR-8 and convert that to coaxial S/PDIF, much more commonly available as a digital audio I/O port on soundcards.
Although my CDRW-5000 has both.

The MIDIMAN DIO 24/48 and 24/96 soundcards have both optical and coax S/PDIF ins and outs and are not very expensive.Cheers!
