im a bachelor of Art in music production and for my course i had to record a cover song. i didnt get marked very highly on it and they didnt seem to like the mix/styling so i would like your opinions.

the track is a cover of the main song that acompanies the silent hill 3 game, entitled:
'You're not here' - Akira Yamaoka

i might consider remixing it slightly, but im very pleased with it overall. furthermore, there is a second track (which i know has some mild timing issues in the loop i created, but its was produced for the same portfolio. again, opinions please. this one did better in marks than the first which i was suprised about. the second track is daft punks:

What college was it the college for automated vocals? The Silent Hill sounds way better to me, no automation that I recognized. I don't know why, but the second is so overpowering that it is clipping my left speaker, they are just 5" KRK's but I never hear that from anything else that I listen to. That's a cool track for the Silent Hill game, I haven't heard it before, but I like it.

not really sure what you mean by college for automated vocals?? i studied at Leeds College of Music in the UK. there are only 3 music institutes like it in the uk and its a great place
 
I meant "autotune" like you here on ALL of todays pop music. I don't like the effect and most people don't but maybe that is what made it get a better grade. It would be stupid if that was it, but that's what I meant. Sorry for the wrong word my hard drive started chattering like crazy, it's time for the backup one. I'm sure it's a great place so don't take me that seriously about stuff like that. I think you've done a great job here. Keep jamming.

I think you really need to expand your sample base.

Look at Cher's and T-Pain's sales figures and tell us again about how ... most people don't ... like Autotune...
 
i used autotune as i required the robotic sound. but then i removed the effect when the final part comes in. personally not a big fan of autotune either, but i wanted that sound on this track
 
The autotuned vocals are clearly an effect - I'm guessing you're not familiar with the original trumpino1. I like Daft Punk a lot and they do that vocal style well as it fits in with their retro-futurey sound thing. I think you took on a tough one sku and got caught a little between trying to do it differently and matching the polish of the original.

It sounds good when the full on guitar kicks in, but the mix sounds a little thin in the first section - I'd have either changed the song style with a more natural lo-fi rock-ish sound and ditched the robot vocals or kept the vocals as they are and worked on the dynamics of the first part of the mix if staying more faithful to the original.

Your posting in the other thread shows just how much your mixing has progressed since :)

Yeah I really meant that most people "I know" don't like it and it don't seem real popular around here either. Sure it has worked for a lot of the music scene today. Listen to any of the pop stations right now and it is on almost every song that you hear. I don't care how much Cher or T-Pain have made of their autotune, they haven't made a dime off of me. But I get what you're saying.

I went to youtube and listened to the original of the Daft Punk. Not my cup of tea, but I will say that I like your rocked up version much better. Have a good one.

I think it's safe to say that those who invest in product from the likes of Cher and T-Pain can only loosely be defined as "people".

hahaha, you win!

Yeah, usually when i cover songs, i like to keep it as close to the original as possible, however the brief for the assignment was that i had to take influence from 3 artists and edit the track however i felt appropriate. my references arent great, but hey ive finished now with a good grade. the track at the beginning is meant to be sort of 'crappy' so that when the big part kicks in it really boots you up the anus. thanks for all the comments thus far!
