I know this question has been asked alot but i've read numerous threads and reviews and i still have no idea whether to get a Dmp3 or vtb-1. I haven't really found alot of vocal samples of these pre's on the net. Some people say the vtb-1 is better for bright mics and the dmp3 for neutral mics. I have a Studio Projects C1(BRIGHT) and an ADK A-51(pretty neutral) so i'm stuck. I don't have the cash to get both right now. I'm looking for a temporary fix over the behringer until i can save up enough cash for an RNP. What are yalls opinions on these pre's for recording vocals? Also, does anyone anywhere have any sound clips?

I'm a big fan of capturing clean and honest. Add eq, tube warmer effects etc later. Both mic pre's are good at what they do. Not knowing which Berhi mic pre's you have makes it hard to compare but, asside from the noisey nature of some of their lower end gear, they tend to be pretty flat. Compared to the DMP3, you probably won't notice a lot of difference except for the cleaner signal especially when you pour on the gain. The VTB gives you the chance to "dial in" some tube effect but, as I mentioned before, I prefer to do that after the fact. Once you record through the tube grinder, you can't un-do it.

Sorry, no clean cut answer especially since it sounds like your budget is the driving motivator. Personally, having gone through the budget buys and learning the hard way, and if I were to do it all again, I would have collected nice clean mic pre's first, then sprinkled on with flavored mics instead of the other way around.

Dont bother......skip the temporary fix and just save up the cash for the RNP. You'll spend less in the long run.

If I was doing mainly vocals I would save for the best single channel pre or channel strip I could afford. I'd also take my mics into a local GC and check out as many pres/channel strips as I could before buying anything.

FWIW, in the $500 range, some very talented recordists and pros who frequent this Board have used the Rane MS1B/RNP combo, Safe Sound P1, Art Pro Channel, Presonus VXP and Eureka, Meek OneQ, M-Audio Tampa, Voicemaster Pro and others with excellent results.

Good input guys. Greatly appreciated! Only reason i said until i get the RNP is because i'm saving up for a yamaha motif and that's going to set me back over a grand and i'd like to record some decent vocals right now. The behringer pre sounds pretty nasty. I never realized how bad it was until my ears got alot better. Once, i bought an Art tube mp v3 and i couldn't tell the difference between it and the behringer. When i go back and listen to those tracks, i can now. Wasn't leaps and bounds better but it was better. I hear the vtb-1 or dmp3 is alot better than the art's, especially in the noise department. Hopefully i'll come across some money so i can get the RNP sooner but i've got to get something better for right now. The nasty highs on the behringer are killing me. It gives every mic you plug into it the same sound almost. I used my mic at my friends house and it sounded alot better coming thru his yamaha aw16g pre's(his room doesn't sound loads better than mine). I listened to some recordings on soundclick(even tho not really a great source to judge from) and i heard great recordings with both. I also have a saxophone and guitar i record sometimes.

If it's a stepping stone, I'd say get the DMP3. It'll still be a good usable clean stereo pre after you upgrade to your gold channel mono pre up the road (way up the road the way you make decisions).

Now go buy one and quit dicking around with the Behringer a year later.

we're not all rich man. sometimes you can only make an education guess and bite the fuckin' bullet and see how things work out.

just cause you bought something doesn't mean you can re-sell/trade. perhaps try and find a place that will do 14-day money-back guarantees, try one out and if you don't like it take it back.

you can ask for opinions and reviews but most probably you won't find someone who's used the same mics thru the same pre with the same voice type (which are the real contributing factors), so narrow it down and just fuckin' buy one!

This is true. I went for a DMP3 after using a Behringer mixer, and to my ears the difference was noticeable.
