This is another tune that's part of an ongoing project with a good friend. There are a few things that are bugging me with this one. First, I used a drum loop which normally I hate doing (I'd rather have real drums but the loop was handy). Second is the keyboard part which was my partner's idea. He loves it, me, not so much. I just wanted some fresh ears on it before I go any further with it.
It's called "Gettin' By".

I must have clicked on the lo-fi link at first. With the fretless bass and the accordian in reminded me of the Northern Exposure theme. The drum loop's quite unusual, at first I wondered if the loop points where wrong or if it was in an odd time signature, but I think it works well now I hear the better quality version. Nice tune, simple mix and arrangement that works well.

I have no issues with the loop or the keys. I found it a little "wide" (I suppose that's wrong in mixing but I like a bit more narrow mix). So my opinion only.. Absolutely love the slide work :D:D:D:D

The high end is very clear. Also, cool tune! I like the slide work as well.

This has great clarity and separation. I think the loop fits fine as far as what is played and how everything else fits with it. It is so clear and widely panned though, that it almost gives the whole thing a disjointed feel. Maybe bringing a few elements closer to the center would integrate everthing more?

The vocal processing (doubling, plus...?) led to the vocals sounding kind of on top of, or outside of everything else in a way. Not able to explain it too well, sorry, but I just think they should sound more like they're in the same space as the rest of it.

I know what you mean about the mix being too wide. I have the rhythm guitar hard left and keys hard right as I was evaluating the keys. I would normally bring them in at 9:00 and 3:00 respectfully but burned the mix with them fully panned I still would like to humanize the drums somehow. I might dub in some real cymbals/ride or something.

It's a good song. If the vocal stood out more it would make it a great song!

If it was me I'd do a few more variations on the loop - but it sounds pretty good.

By "keys" are we talking the "accordian" patch in the right ear? SOunds OK, but what I would do is not fade it out at the very end, but actuallly stop it, like a real accordian does (I assume, I know jack about accordians....)

Agree on getting a few more central elements though...

Nice slidy stuff though... excellent!

I think the mix sounds fine. I hate the drum loop though. I like the pattern for an intro or change up, but not through the whole song. I think a simpler pattern would fit the verses better and lend some variety to the song. My opinion on the song itself? Meh. I really like all the little parts and variety of sounds going on, but the song does nothing for me. It's pretty sterile and uneventful. Good mix though. I like em wide. That's what she said! Hey-oh!

Thanks to all how took the time to listen. Back to the drawing board.

Agree that the drum pattern should be simple.

The thing that struck me about the keyboard was not so much the part, but the tone. It's offset on the left by a rather full sounding guitar. But the keyboard tone is fairly thin. It creates, at least to me, an unbalanced mix. Might be more true on headphones.

So I think the keyboard part can work, but it should have more low end to it.

I find the mix disjointed in that some of the elements are really wide, and the electric guitar is dead-center. I'd double-track the electric guitar and then pan both takes R/L about 50%. Spatially, something is wrong with the mix, but I can't put my finger on it. Vocals need a bit more sparkle, too. Also - I am listening on earbuds, so take with a grain of salt.
