mgiles, soon (supposedly!), Studio Projects is coming out with the B
series. My guesstimate is that the B1 will have a street price of about
$80 and the VTP-1 tube mic pre will be about $225.
Sorry I didn't mention it sooner, I'm getting over a nasty flu.

Sounds like a good combo. Thanks! I will check into both of those.

I was thinking of getting the mackie VLZ 1402 Pro for it's pre-amps, and then I saw the Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro. Is there any difference in these exept the number of tracks and number of plug in's? Because the 1202 is definantly more in my price range.

Mackie says they use the same pre amps on all of their mixers.
That's the same reason I got the 1202.

I vote for a small diaphragm condensor, like Shure SM81 (about $320), placed quite a bit away from the sound source (4 to 8 feet, perhaps). I've never recorded anything in that genre, so I'm of course just guessing here...

Omni would of course also work, but then your acoustic surrounding is even more important than with a cardioid mic. You probably also need to try different mic placements/positions, not just the distance, but also the angel.

I think you are very correct that placement and angles and distance are all going to play very important roles in this kind of recording. It may be a long prcess, and I can tell you guys all about it so you don't have to go through the same thing (like you all will have very high%'s of ever recording opera....But just in case you do, you will know where to look. =)

I am sure alot of what you learn will be of help to everyone recording ANY type of music.

Keep it up and keep on making music,
