Remember that "if it sounds good, its good" !
When I was starting with mixing I liked to have separate tracks for everything, including different gain staging on guitars. With more experience, I'm getting more and more likely to use tons of automation because I find it comfy. Sometimes it happens that I realize that 6 curves of automation to control a guitar amp simulator is a bit too much, ten I go for separate tracks. But generally my vocals and guitars do have 3-4 envelopes, mostly for volume, brightness, bass cut and threshold of distortion.
