Slowing becoming un-noob.
by The Mars Volta. Any song off of The Bedlam In Goliath album.
Here's a song that starts off with a little drum solo so you can hear the bass drum pretty decently.

Any song off of that album, you can hear the bass drum. I can't get enough of it, and I really wish I could replicate it. It's the bass drum sound I've been lookin' for for ages.
Any suggestions?
Mic placement? different mics? different heads? Higher tuning? Anything.

Thanks guys.

I like their stuff too, will throw some ideas out but take with a grain of salt...

First there's the obvious, it's an acrylic drum.
His reso head is vented, at 4-5 o'clock very near hoop.
Appears to be a dynamic mic through the hole.
Appears to be another mic internally mounted.

its probably a mix of a drum sample and their recording.
Hmm, alright.

Internally mounted? Sounds like a pain in the ass.
I'll try out some dynamic mics. I'll probably invest in a new reso head eventually as well. Hmm.

Things you CAN do:
1. clear EQ3 on bass drum batter with EQ3 on front (with small hole, RE:MidiPunks response)
2. AKG mic'd internally (you can use a boom stand without having to mount it in the BD)
3. similar relatively tight tuning with weighted dampening on the bottom part of the batter head

Things you probably can't do:
1. DW 20x24 Acrylic bass drum.
2. Ocean Way Studio engineers and the equipment they posess

Easiest way to achieve that dreamy sound for a humble home recordist would be through sampling and triggering.
