What are some decent mics that can be stuck over/in between 2 toms. I need it to be dynamic. I used a lowend Superlux vocal mic (all I had left) and it works and has surprisingly little bleed from the cymbals. I need it to be cheap.

I'm thinking so far...

AKG D1000E
AKG D550
One of those Audio Technica snare/tom mics
Some kind of CAD/Nady tom mic
Audix I5 (little out of my price range)

anything else?

If you need cheap, the ol' 57 works great. My fav however is a C-1000 (and on snare too).

actually that's what i had to do on the last recording i did for my band since the drummer decided at the last minute to use 4 toms instead of three like i planned for. I used a beta 58 for two toms and it worked ok but not great... you can't have the mic too close to either so that you can get a full sound from each, but that leads to a lot of bleed from other parts of the kit. Basically it comes down to EQing well afterwards and possibly cutting out the parts of the track you don't need. You can listen to the recording if you want, http://myspace.com/emberfield.

best investment I ever made with regard to recording drums and bleed??...

A multi-channel GATE!!!!...(used post recording)...could be easily used during the recording, I just feel safer applying gates/compression afterwards.
I can't believe the control of seperate parts I now have, no bleeding, and full volume/FX seperation everytime.

But hey...that's just me.

I'm sure that perfect mic placement and mics and a nice room would be better.....

Regards,
Spit.

I use a sennheiser MD421 on toms and get great results. Sometimes i have used a MD441 and had amazing results. The e609 is also good. The e609 is the 'cheapest' of this selection. MD421's can sometimes be picked up second hand for similar prices to SM57's the MD441 is pricey but a brilliant dynamic mic that is great on everything. It would be my 'Desert island' Mic...that is if i was stuck on a desert island with audio equipment, not likely i may add.

609s rock....

I've also got some mics here that are part of a PA I'm sheltering & they are super cardiod Behringers:eek::eek::eek: I know, I know but they sound good

Yeah, 441's and 421's are great on drums in general. Of course my standard disclaimer; the drums themselves are going to have the greatest impact on the sound than mic flavors.

or try micing the extra tom and capture samples of it. Then, track the entire kit to capture the performance and add the tom hits where they need to be afterwards.

(actually a good idea to do this with every part of the kit)

just a thought

it's not dynamic but AKG 4050s are really nice on toms...I did one in the middle of rack toms last time I recorded some drums and I loved the sound

Th MD441 is one of the best out there as far as I'm concerned. I used one on a kick drum one time - about 2 feet from the drum and aimed at the middle of the drum and it was brilliant sounding.:D

I personally prefer condensers for the drumkit.

Just go with SM57's. As much as I hate the things, they are hard to beat for this purpose.

Personally, I would say invest in enough MXL 602's to close mic each drum with a condenser. (I prefer condensers if close mic'ing toms.)

Getting a great drum sound

Well, I've been reading this thread wondering if anyone was going to post this. Without a great sounding kit and someone who knowsd how to play it the rest doesn't matter. As to mikes this guy is right, 421's are always a good choice.

What is it whit old threads re-appering today? This guy was recording the toms on 2007, they may have figured it out by now? Or gone off and got married, found a day job, had a couple of kids, and lived happily ever after.

Alan.
