I'm curious to know if there is a cable, connector, or box that will let me record from a S/PDIF output to an optical minidisc input. The minidisc's input is an 1/8th inch type of input that is supposed to support digital recording.

S/PDIF is a coaxial format for digital transmission, which uses a 75ohm cable for transfers. As such, you need to convert the signal to an optical output. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, you might want to consider making your own little connector (cos it would eb a handy thingto have). There's a schematic @ http://www.iso.gmu.edu/~gsopko/spdifttl.html which by my calculations would cost $3 or $4 dollars to build (and another $5 for the power supply).

Also, if you want to know anything about the digital formats used in recording (S/PDIF, AUES, Toslink), have a look at http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/docs/audio/spdif.html It's pretty technical, but covers a lot of stuff.

Actual pre-built converters can be found all over the place. Try: http://www.minidisc.org/acc_table.html http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/WNAMM98/TOSLINK/ http://www.core-sound.com/co3.html

That should keep you busy for a while ;)
