I know it depends on the voice, blah blah, but which do you prefer... particularly for male voices.

B1

The gang here turned me onto a DPM3 and MC300/TC with the SPB1 Mic.

It's a great combo for home hobbyist in the <$100 range.

Can't go wroing with a Shure, but for me the SPB1 added a bit above the
58 or 57.

But if I could only have 1 microphone..it'd be a 57.

Tom Petty was on stage singing thru 57's, Bono/U2 made a comment how funny it was the studio engineers trying to get his SM58 sound....

The SM58 gets a lot of use around here on male vocals.

Frankly, if I had to sing through either one of those mics, I'd probably slash my wrists. Vocal mics are like shoes, they either fit or they don't. They don't fit me. The list of cheap mics I would use before either one of them is rather long. For instance, Sennheiser e835/e845, AKG D320/D330/D770, AKG C2000B, Electrovoice EV N/D 257, Audio Technica ATR40. My point is not that the B-1 or the SM57 (both of which I own) suck, but that there's just no telling what mic will sound good on any given singer. The SM57/58 simply zigs where my voice zags, and EQ won't fix it. I find the B-1 flat and lifeless on my voice, but a pretty good percussion mic. Different strokes for different folks. Either one of those mics will sound good on a lot of singers.-Richie

Well said Richie, man, you gotta start writing some of this down! Never mind....you did!
