Frankly, if I had to sing through either one of those mics, I'd probably slash my wrists. Vocal mics are like shoes, they either fit or they don't. They don't fit me. The list of cheap mics I would use before either one of them is rather long. For instance, Sennheiser e835/e845, AKG D320/D330/D770, AKG C2000B, Electrovoice EV N/D 257, Audio Technica ATR40. My point is not that the B-1 or the SM57 (both of which I own) suck, but that there's just no telling what mic will sound good on any given singer. The SM57/58 simply zigs where my voice zags, and EQ won't fix it. I find the B-1 flat and lifeless on my voice, but a pretty good percussion mic. Different strokes for different folks. Either one of those mics will sound good on a lot of singers.-Richie
