On the fence between tascam 2488 & Computer software (Pro Tools) need advise

I'm looking into setting up a simple recording studio that I would use for personal use and possibly teaching guitar students. I was thinking of getting a Tascam 2488. I did look into Pro Tools but feel that it would be a big jump as far as gear and time. My goal would be to record some jazz/blues style songs. My time is limited so I would want to do spend more time recording my ideas than remixing for demos etc.

Hoping to receive some good advise.

I'm still diggin recording with my 2488/2, it is so easy to get it going and to record whatever i need to. For me the ease and economics keep me using for home recording. The only downside is having only 8 inputs and the display leaves a lot to be desired especially compared to ProTools or other recording programs.
I am doing a bit of mixing and engineering these days on lots of systems and ProTools certainly has some great features, if you can afford to go that route but you're looking at spending several thousand dollars to equal the capabilities of the 2488 and have all the headaches. I'm not really sure that if i could afford to if I would upgrade.
 
Go for the 2488.I think pro tools would be overkill for what you're needing it for.
Also these all in one units are surprisingly good sounding.
I have a Korg D1600 which sounds nice,is very portable and easy to use.
It just doesn't get much use because im recording with analog gear now.
 
You can also look at other DAW's instead of protools. Lots of them have simpler versions under $100. Even Reaper has a free version. You can get basic hardware, mic's, monitors. The whole thing can be under $500 and you can always upgrade as you go.
 
If you want easy plug in and play recording go with the 2488.

Another +1 for the 2488. I just got mine and it's wonderful, especially after experiencing a ton of computer woes with my old setup.

Down the line, I want to go back to a computer-based DAW, but will likely use the 2488 on the front end to record (I just like having real knobs and sliders), then dump the .wav files onto my laptop for detailed editing/mixing/etc.

Yes but that's the same with a lot of gear, you only hear about the ones that did not work, you don't hear from the many 1000's that work without ever having a problem.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be going with the 2488. I'll see if they can check the unit before shipping from the US to Malaysia. I'm looking at purchasing from B&H Photo from New York. Prices and availability in Malaysia are forcing me to have it shipped in.

What are you people using for a 2488 set up? Monitors mikes etc... Again thanks for the replies.
 
I use an older pair of Tascam CM-10 3 way studio monitors powered by a Crown CTS600 amp for the mains and a pair of KRK Rockets for mid field.
Being a budget home studio guy I have a pair of MXL V63M ldc, pair of Behringer C-2 sdc, pair of Shure SM57, Naiant X-S, and a selection of dynamic mics for other things one of my favorites is a Peavey PVi2 mic that works really well for vox.

Amen! +1 on that. I've passed on some great deals because a few biased reviews.
