on my way

I see what you mean about an american feel to it.
I thought there might have been a few fouled bass notes at the first chord change but that could be attributed to style I suppose.
Very nice feel to this, I thought of JJ Cale for some reason.

Hey Dobro,

Interesting vocals there, i wanna say your voice reminds me of blues styling but im not sure if it's also some other style as well. I found the dry rhythm guits on the right to be a little insistant. Writing was well done. Is this part of your latest album?

Needs a SLuiCe mouth trumpet. :)

Loving the song.

The mix feels a little left heavy. Maybe swing the bass just a little to the right to counter balance the steadier guitar coming from the left?

It's not my favorite tune of yours, though I think it's really good, which should not mean anything really. Not sure how I'd improve it though either. Maybe make it less American? LOL :) I know...put down the beer, Tom. The recording is fine and the performance is very good. Sounds like you've maybe been making extra efforts in intonation too, but musically I think I just wanted it to go somewhere else before it was done. Thus, at the moment, I think it would make good filler. Good filler. Opinion subject to change.

I gotta say, I was wishing for a Rhodes keyboard kinda thing off there in the right instead of the electric guitars. - go buy one willya?:)

Cool stuff as usual.

I agree that a little less low end would work.

My one gripe is that as I was listening to this I kept kinda wishing for a little bit "looser" arrangement. A little more bluesy and less "straight on the beat". And maybe a little more variety with the guitars. I dunno if that makes sense, but it felt almost miltary and I kinda wanted something a little more "drunken salvation army marching band".

But way cool tune - I'm just nitpicking.

Chris

Cool tune. Agree with the left heavy comments. Even if you moved the bass over a bit to the right it may help out.

I can tell you're really digging the incorporation of drums into your tunes, albeit sparse.

Nice Tune Dobro.

Well, right off the bat, you have broken a cardinal rule here on homerecording.com ... you mixed the harmony vocals TOO LOUD !!! OMG !!!

I'm just kidding and you know it.

I really like your unique brand of vocalization and we really get to hear that in the beginning.

And again at 2:00, wonderful, I hearing it brutha !!!

Ok ... 15th listening :D !!!

Really nice mix and balance , I'm at 00:50 coming into the verse.

I think everything needs to come way-way down, 3-4db ... for a Big contrast. Keep the vocal at it's current level.

The listener is then given a big 'sonic' change and wonders what is happening, and all that's left, is what's is important, the verse.

I'm struggling a little bit on the first listen to understand all the verse words.

On the second listening no problem.

JESUS !!! lol , good stuff ...

Hey ... I gotta go now ... I'm 'On My Way' ...

Jolly good show old chap !

paul Simon would probly like to get his hands on this. I'm cool with everything you did except for that panned right guitar being loud enough to be a distraction from the singing. Cool stuff Dob' .

This one has a real different feel for you ... your branching out a bit (kind of felt it was a bit gospel/blues at the beginning there) I am totally getting that "late night, only a few people left in the bar" type feeling when musicians kind of let down their hair and just play what they want to play.

Very cool. Much more straightforward than most of your tunes. I dig the bg vocals and the changes you are using in there.

Very nice work. I didn't notice any mix stuff on these cheap speakers.

Very nice overall!

:D

Spinning this again...

I love the intro.

I think the lead vocal could come up a touch. Just enough to make the words a little more discernible. One of your best songwriting qualities is your story-telling, thus it should never be left to chance that something might be lost. I am thinking that if I could make out the story a little better then my comments from last night might become less relevant.

Yea, I don't think there's any problem with the arrangement. I think it's that I don't know what you're saying. And I believe this is just a matter of making the lead vocal more clear. Or I'm crazy. Take your pick. :) Either or both might be true.

Man Dobro!! I totally dig this.....i'm going to listen to it all night!!

Okay, I'm hot on the trail of reworking the song a bit, so I'll take this opportunity to thank everybody for their feedback and head off any more before you hear the reworked version. I've taken on a couple of things: it's bottom-heavy (does my bottom sound big in this one?) - I'll either redo or re-EQ the bass. I've tweaked the panning also. Finally, it's kinda predictable sounding. Groucho's comment about it sounding sorta military, when what he'd like to hear is some drunken salvation army band just really hit me in the right spot, so I've launched myself back into the tune. It's the same old story - after you've listened to a tune 4 dozen times or 8 dozen times, you stop hearing possibilities after a while. If something interesting comes out of it, I'll re-post it, otherwise I'll just rework the existing mix.

Sluice - thanks for your considerable feedback and multiple listens. I figured something out last night - I can get the vocal heard better if I just compress it a tad more just before the final mixdown. I try to keep tracks as natural as possible, but yeah, the vocal needs hearing. I could also get it heard better if I enunciated word endings more clearly too LOL.

I really appreciate all your feedback on this one. This forum's *such* a useful sounding board. You guys are the poor man's producer. :)

Poor Man's Producer

Now that's a good name for the next primary topic on the main homepage of the forum's.

'POOR MAN'S PRODUCER'

Just imagine how many pages the flame wars could be ... light years ... and more ... :D

I'm with SLuiCe, I even understand what he means with 'good filler': Dobro, I believe you've spoiled us with your 'surprising-moment-occuring-somewhere-in-the-middle-of-the-song-tactics'. When it's lacking, we (the fans :) ) are (just a bit, just a tiny bit) disappointed :D LOL

Anyway, enjoyable listen whatsoever. Intonation is better, for sure (your intonation 'problems' are kinda weird though...not sure whether it is a problem.....you're always heading towards the right note in your quirky long glissando style of singing. You always hit the right note just before the note has finished! It just takes you a while....it's your style of singing......hey, I even described it to a friend as a 'natural eastern' influence )

MMmm, ya. I agree they're not (intonation) problems at all to me. I've read some people complain about it sometimes on your song, but it's just the way you slide your vocals. I would certainly not want you to sacrifice your style over a couple notes that sound "flat" to the uninitiated. When I said it sounds like you've been working on intonation, I didn't mean to imply it was necessary. I choose expression over accuracy.

Thanks Tom...I had trouble describing it in english but you got it! :D

I liked it. Nothing to add that hasn't been said. Because of your quirky style (that's a compliment) I think you can get away with some weird panning issues. In fact I almost would expect some quirky panning. It doesn't sound to me like I'd expect to hear a band do this. And I'm with Ped and Sluice on your intonation. You don't have intonation problems - you do cool things with intonation. So does Buddy Holly, and Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), and ....you guessed it, the Residents.

This is a very unique piece. WHile I can't add a lot on the technical side, I can say, as a musician, that the song takes you to a place in your mind, which I think is something that most songwriters strive for. It had a real southern old school feel that you don't hear much anymore. At least I don't.

Sounds like the product of a Dylan/Petty copulation....I am going to say that Dylan was giving and Petty was receiving - for the simple fact that D holds dominion over all posterity!
