I have an old peavey cab with a switch to change between 8ohm-"stereo" or 16 ohms-"mono".

Can I assume that if the switch is in the 8 ohm position, I will be running two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel=8ohms?

Stupid question time~ would it be easily tested with a multimeter?

your right my friend. parallel divides. series multiplies

So, there is redundant wiring present only for the functionality of this switch?
Essentially, two sets of wiring?

but if you have two speakers only. they must be seperate in stereo, and series together in mono. Im thinking the speakers are 8 ohm.

Oh crap.... sorry.

I forgot to say it is a 4x12 cab....

If its a 16 ohm mono cab the speakers will be 16 ohms.

And if you can switch it to stereo 8ohm for two 8 ohm inputs, then you are running only 2 speakers with one input.

Cool, I can run the 4x12 as a 2x12 @ 8 ohms, while running the Avatar 2x12 @ 8 ohms.

BTW~Since it is an old cab, and has seen its' share of use, can the ohms be easily checked? Not positive that the switch is functional...

This isn't gonna be good for you, so turn the volume down, but put your ear up to the center of all four speakers and see if they are making noise.

Impedance doesn't change with time. If 2 speakers are working, it's 8 ohms, if 4 speakers are working, it's 16.

You can't use a multi-meter to check for impedance, only resistance.

Ya gotta love Farview~ breakin' it down into small words I can understand :D
That certainly does make sense.
Thanks guys...
