I recently found out that the album "Hairway to Steven" by the Butthole Surfers was recorded on digital equipment in the mid 1980's. I have always thought that this album had a very unique sound, almost an artificial sound. if you have heard it, you know what i mean. Does anyone know what kind of digital recorders were around during this time period or perhaps what may have been used to record this classic album?

I think way back then, the only multi track digital machine was a Sony unit. Joe Satriani's "Surfing With An Alien" was recorded on one, and that album has the same fake/synthetic sound too. Rush did an album on one too that sounded like ass.

It was actually a tape based multi track machine. Open reel.

I think I remember reading something about Sony letting Zappa take one of their 24 track digital machines on the road with him back in the 80s.

it definately has a unique sound, thats all i'll say.

They had a digital Sony reel-to-reel deck at Middle Tennessee State University back in the early 90's. Don't know how much use it got.
