I'm not sure what the deal is, but out of the blue, my local Guitar Center seems to have gotten a shipment of Oktava mics. I think they have about 7 or 8 MC012's and 3 or four MK319's. I think I can get the 012's for $60 apiece, and the 319's for $99. I don't know if this is happening elsewhere, but if you have been hankering for an Oktava mic, you may want to make inquiries now. If you are really hard up, check with me and I might be able to help you out.-Richie

I'd buy em' all and what ever you don't need, e-bay...have you seen what they are going for on there.
I'm gonna call GC soon as they open out here.
Thanks for the info,
-k

But... uh... the Oktavas aren't Chinese... They're Russian.... RighT?

Mk012

Richard:

I was just getting ready to post this:

I know these are currently very hard to get at a decent price, so I'm posting this info for the interested.

I know they were once as low as $50 each, but I just picked up two more new Octava MK012 mics at a local Guitar Center for $100 each. They're not advertising them and they don't have them out on display. I just happened to ask "Will you ever have the Octava franchise again?" The saleperson said that they received a "mysterious shipment" a few days ago.

They have three left. Plastic "alligator mouth" case, cardoid capsule, pad, mic, clip, Russian manual with serialized frequency response curve.

The store here in Knoxville has one from the old lot that they have never sold. Last time I was there they had $200 on it.

My local GC says they got a shipment about 2 weeks ago. $100 for cardioid, pad, clip, and body.

He says they have 7 available, and are willing to do a pair for $160.

The three-pattern set is $199.

I asked if they are gonna continue to sell the MK012's, and he asked a manager that said yes, they will have regular stock, but nothing near the quantities they used to carry.

Hmmm....GC owns MusiciansFriend if I'm not mistaken....could that mean that they will soon carry mc012's for cheap?

Everything I've read suggests you really want to audtion the Octavas in person due to QC issues. Especially if you're buying a pair.

That's strange, because everything I've read suggests most people are happy with the off-the-shelf Octava MC-012's.

I guess that's why Harvey went to the trouble to explain how to demo mics and what steps to take to do your own matching.

Apparently your mileage DOES vary.

Or you can just match the fucking dots on the fucking box.

I 2nd c7sus, where you been DJL?...and I don't even have any of the mics.

Humm, well lets find out by asking everyone on this bbs who owns an Octava MC-012 or two... hey everyone, do you like your Octava MC-012's or not? Thanks

For the record... I like both the Octava MC-012's that I got from the "SoundRoom" and the ones I got from "Musicians Friend" and I haven't had any QC problems.

EDIT: Spelling correction.

Got two from guitar center, paid 240 for the matched pair. they are great! I did listen to all the ones they had and the "matched" pair were......uh, matched. I used to record using ldc's and I liked that until I heard the oktavas. Much cleaner and defined, especially heavily strummed parts. For finger stuff or quiet I still like a pair of large, one at the twelfth fret and One at my ear, but I digress....Ya I like the mc012's. By the way, how are the lomo heads and omnis

Certainly a lot of folks like the 012's. But AFAIK the main reason GC stopped carrying them was because of QC problems.

The fact that they are going to carry them again in smaller numbers indicates that they have grown tired of dealing with the returns. Perhaps, because of the volume GC does, they were able to convince Octava or Mckay that it was in their best interest to address the issue, and are testing the waters again by selling smaller quantities.

I guess this exact issue is how Harvey came to this BBS in the first place.

This thread took a while for me to find, but might be some good reading for anybody interested in buying a pair of the 012's.
