I want to buy two Oktava MK012 Overheads to use in a drums 3 mic system.

These mics come in:

Factory Matched stereo pairs or not.

A choice of cardioid, hypercardioid or omni-directional polar patterns.

What options do I NEED (for recording and live drums) and what would be handy for other uses.

Thanks guys!

I have a pair which are matched within 2/10th of a dB. Mine have cardiod capsules and separate -10 pads which screw in under the capsule, which means you need to handle them very carefully when assembling them.

Without spending 10 times more money on each mic, I think they rank with the best overheads around.

If by that you mean 2 Oktava MK012's and something like a Sennheiser 421 for the kick, that's a setup I often start with and if there's a dead spot or a weak spot I put up another mic...

Thanks!

I presently own an Audix D6 :)

So (cardiod):

What would be typical uses for the Hypercardioid and Omnidirectional?

Hypercardiod is a tighter pattern than cardiod. You would use it in a case of trying reject more room ambience or neigboring sounds such as a hihat next to a snare, or a guitar next to a fiddle.

The omni is only useful when you have a decent sounding room, since it will pick up the whole enchilada. It will make a nice picture of the overall kit and wont have drastic tonal changes as you move closer to the sound sounce because proximity effect is very smal with omnis. BUT (and this is a BIG BUT) if you have a nasty room the room sound will be a big part of the picture.
That is why for most home recordist recording in smaller untreated rooms, cardiod mics seem to get better consistant results.

So...for the sames reasoning cardiod would be a good choice for a live recording and or Front Of House main speakers in a large gym?

and Thank You!

Personally, I'd prefer the Hypercardioids in that situation. Actually, I'm wondering about using the Hypercardioids for recording in general. I've used them on the toms before (not oktavia's, but hypercardioids) and I loved the sound I was getting, so I've wondered about using the hypercardioids as overheads myself.

I bought a pair at GC for $69 each. No capsules. They sound great. I love them. You'll have a hard time finding overheads as good in that price range.
