Oktava's site says they're great as drum overheads but I haven't heard much about that anywhere else. I hear they have somewhat of a lower sound which probably wouldn't be great for cymbals. Do any of you have experience using these? I have mics for all the other drums in the kit so I don't need these to pick of everything, just cymbals.
Also, I have a 219 laying around, would this be any good on the snare?
Sorry if this question has been answered before, I searched but didn't find anything that fully answered it.

My personal experience with the 319s as drum overheads is not positive. I recorded 9-10 tracks and several rehearsals using these mics as drum overheads. The mids were tubby and unflattering, the high-end was brittle, and the overall sound was lacking in detail. I switched to MK-012s (same room, same drum kit, same preamps, same recorder) and the improvement was tremendous.

So, based on my experience, I can't recommend the 319s as drum overheads. It's certainly possible that they'd work on another kit in another room, but they wouldn't be my first choice. I have used a 319 as a hi-hat mic and a snare-bottom mic, and it works sufficiently well for those purposes.

I on the other hand began my "career" in a studio that used these mics as overheads. They sound amazing to me, his mixes are really incredible considering his studio. His recording room barely fits the drums and the drummer and has 6foot 3 inch ceilings. Now the difference in opinion could be the fact his are the russian ones and I've heard the chinese ones really blow compared to the russian ones.

the brighter the cimbals, the more likely that i'll put them up.
they can help tame some harsher stuff a little (i find)

on something like K's i wouldn't use them, thoes are already dark.

how can i tell the difference between the russian ones and the knock offs?

that i know of, thare is no problem with knock off 319's

you're thinking of the 012's

the thing is, i only need these overheads to mic the cymbals. i'll have individual mics on each drum. so will these sound band if i have each drum miked and then use these as overheads? like i said, i mainly need them for cymbals.

Overhead mics aren't just for the cymbals. They are meant to pick up the whole set. The close mics augment the overheads.
