I have a cheap condenser mic. Which would be the next best thing to do. I can buy a good AT mic, or a small mixer with phantom power, or the pre-amp/compressor set up (presonus or art). Which system would give me the most bang for my buck. I guess the question is, is it better to buy a good mic with so so front end, or better to buy a pre-amp and processing stuff with an ok mic?

almost forgot

I could also go with the delta 66 and breakout box thing.
Has built in preamp phantom power etc.

The next best thing for sound quality? How big of an object is money?
Get a good preamp, and good converters if you are financially able. A good mic and preamp will clean up a good percentage of your signal. Add to that the converters and you almost can't go wrong.
Dont foget tube patch cables.

Buy a better mic.

Mics and monitors are your mechanical conversions in sound, and I say is where you should spend good money. A great preamp will just show how much more horrible a cheap mic is.....same with great converters, compressors...etc....

Im the king of cheapskates and I say you need both....you mentioned the Delta soundcard, so Im assuming you need a soundcard, mic, and preamp...how many inputs/outputs do you need on the card (how many sources will you be recording simultaneously)?...do you need digital input/output?...Also will u be recording just vocals or other sources with the mic?....

It will just be me. recording guitars, vocals, bass, keys.
using a pci128 card for the time being with magix studio 5 deluxe. can't justify spending much. maybe just a few hundred total.
stero inputs will be the most needed. never intend to record more than that here. will go to my friends protools studio for more.

I would go in this order.....

Microphone
Preamp
Soundcard
Compressor

For microphone, you might wanna start of with a shure sm57....79.00 most place...alot of people who are cheap use them for vocals here...it also does great micing an amp....

Art Tube MP... 99.00 .....a classic.....

Delta Audiophile 2496 soundcard....24 bit 96hz...good converters...pretty quiet......$150......

Compressor can be done with software plugings until you have money for a RNC compressor...$150

using at mb4000c condenser mic. fair enuff for now.
was thinking maybe the presonus blue tube and blue max. or the ART preamp and tube compressor.
but the delta card...i would still need a phantom power thing . Like a small mixer. still doable tho.

Id go with the Art and the Delta card...the Art has phantom power....for $250 youd have a nice soundcard and preamp with decent converters.....

where can i find the card for $150? searcing the internet the best i have found is $179.
