This time, at M-Audio. We all love M-Audio right? Great stuff, low price, very compatable etc. I agree on all of that. But now look what I found out:

DMP-3 price in the United states (ZZSound, Musician's Friend etc.):
Aprox. 159 dollars

DMP-3 price in Europe (Musik Produktiv, Music Store Koeln etc.):
Aprox. 179 euro's.

159 dollars are currently worth 122,48 eurocents. That means that the DMP-3 is more than 50 dollars cheaper in the United States than in Europe.
The Dollar may be weak, but there is no way you can make me belief that that is a fair difference.

That's almost one third more money in Europe! I'm sure it's not juse M-Audio, but this one just stood out to me. I emailed M-Audio about my discontent, and guess what reply I got:

Its called American buying power. You have to remember that our economy dwarfs every other economy in the world. California has the 5th largest economy in the world.

2000 Economy Facts -

1 United States 8,708,870.00
2 Japan 4,395,083.00
3 Germany 2,081,202.00
4 France 1,410,262.00
5 United Kingdom 1,373,612.00

Deepwater's right, plus the US has much more efficient distribution systems, a much kinder tax regime, etc. Upshot is that in the music world (and computers) US$1 = £1 = €1.40. It's everything, not just M-Audio. A new Fender MIA Jazz is around $750, £750 in the UK.

Somethings work the other way around though. Like when I was looking at consoles.

I am in France and I bought a Dmp3 for a little more than I would have paid for it in the states through Thomann, but I also paid 325 €uros for a Rode NT2000 from a website here in France. I did a lot of web searching before I bought that mic and the best price I found in the U.S. was $599.

I am American, so I have no problems buying equipment from the states. I always do a little researching before I buy. There are a lot of things to consider if you decide to go ahead and buy in the states. Right now, the Euro is really strong against the dollar, but you also have to factor in the shipping, VAT expenses and warranty issues. For example, I bought a martin D-18GE in the states last year while I was visiting family...... a couple of months after I had it I noticed a bridge lifting problem that was covered under the lifetime warranty, but I called Martin and I was told that I would have had to have paid for the shippping expenses both ways to the service center in the states. Martin has a lifetime warranty for guitars bought in the U.S. and although they have Martin authorized repairmen in Europe, the only guitars that they will fix under warranty are the ones purchased in Europe.
I had to pay for the problem out of my own pocket, but even cosndering that, I still paid around half of what i would have had to pay if I bought the same guitar in France. I recently bought Wharfedale monitors which are made in the UK. I considered buying them from a dealer in the states that is a member of this forum, but cosidering that I was quoted $150 for shipping ($425 total). That price wouldn't have included VAT expenses and I also would have had to spend money on power converters for the difference in voltage. I also had a warranty issue because of a problem with a tweeter..... luckily, the store I bought them from has sent me a replacement tweeter which should arrive next week, but it was a bit of a hassle for me. After this last problem, my girlfriend wanted to make mùe promise not to buy anything outside of France, but I couldn't do it, sometimes buying from another country is so much cheaper, it's worth it to take a chance because 9 times out of ten, there won't be a problem.

Ha, Try buying audio gear in AUSTRALIA....

You guys in Europe and USA have it great...so cheap...!!!

Where do you think all the money for those goverment programs come from? Taxes! You guys pay outrageous amount of taxes, and the U.S. is going to end up there if we don't stop the madness.
