hey i got a weekend job and i want to get in to recording ive been into it for a while but what i have been doin is very simple.
i was woundering if i wanted to record my guitar what should i do to record it with distorion.
do i have to have a mic by the speaker/amp?
if so what mic will i need

You should go ahead and do a search for this topic in the forums. It has been discussed a bunch of times. Quick answer though: If you like the distortion tone coming out of your amp, stick a mic in front of it (look around the forums for mic positioning). Classic guitar amp mic is the sm57, although I prefer the Sennheiser e609. Both can be bought for under $100.
If you don't like the sound of your guitar amp, you can buy an amp simulator or add thye distortion in software.

i dont wont to get any software i rather a proper more natual sound.

anyway should i get a shure sm57 for a distotion sound

That would work. However, you are still gonna need recording software, or some sort of hardware recorder.

yeh i know that. i can sort my self out with that.
would u advise gettin a mixing desk and pluggin the mics and stuff into that and then plug the mixing desk into the computer???

Start really simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would suggest you get a 4 track cassette or a little mackie mixer, a couple mics and a used ADAT. Get some recording chops with really simple tools and then you will be able to make some smart choices about gear later on. Get a few SM57 which are great for distorted guitar and a ton of other things.

i got software and i know how to use it but i want hardware now so what would u suggest for that

You'll need a way to get the audio into your computer. For drums, 4 channels is your minimum for drums, IMO. I'd take a look at the M-Audio Delta 44. Then you need a way to preamplify your mics. Depending on your budget you should either get outboard mic preamps (which is the best option sonically) or a mixer (which would give you more preamps for the money). Then you plug your mics into the preamps/mixer into your soundcard and record. If you're recording drums you'll need at least two overhead mics (do a search) a kick drum mic (do a search) and a snare mic (do a search). If you want to mic toms, you'll need tom mics, but you'll also need more soundcard channels.

Hey...what he said!

If you want to record JUST your guitar into your computer soundcard, get a DMP3 preamp, and an sm57. You may be able to even skip the pre, but it would sound a lot better with one. Otherwise, maybe a cheap mixer board?

You need to explain more about what you are trying to accomplish.
