This thing is awesome. I've never used pedals before, just plugged straight into my Marshall. But this pedal sounds great I'm thinking about using it.

What's the deal?

Well, if you bought it, chances are it'd be a good idea to use it.

Okay, check it out. Plug your guitar into the pedal, then the pedal into the amp. When you want to turn the pedal on, step on it. If you want to turn it off, step on it again.

Hope that clears it up.

Oh, I almost forgot, twist the dials around to change the tone. Twist them some more a different way, it'll change the sound again, but the pedal has to be 'on'.

Good luck!

If it's the Kalamazoo one I'm thinking about, it should play very nicely with your Marshall, not a huge pedal guy, but I've always had a soft spot for my vintage rat.

The ProCo RAT rocks. It's great for a bit of crunch, or very distorted tones. I recorded a guy the other week with a Mesa Double Rec and he preferred the RAT over the amp distortion.
The RAt I have has glow in the dark lettering and the favored LM308 op-amp.

Not sure what year my Rat is, but it's one of the Rat 2s (S/N 131157). I love the distortion this thing puts out. Very grungy and compressed when you push it, but also a nice clean overdrive when you pluck softly. Sure it doesn't do metal (well), but who needs metal when you can get this kind of tone?

God EZ, round and round... love WILL find a way, just give it time bro!

I have and use one that I bought in maybe '85. Is that a cool one? The metal case looks the same as the ones they have now. My friend had a "real" one (so he told me). It was in a different case, without the raised edges.

Like this:

It is a big part of my tone. I set the first knob, which is the distortion, I guess, to about 9:00 and the output level at somewhere around 2 or 3 to where it is the same volume off or on. The filter knob is at about 12:00. I think that gives such a precise level of rasp and sustain that still allows you to play a minor chord without cluttering up with overtones.

I replaced the jacks inside and it no longer will work without a power supply, but otherwise it has been perfect. the only other necessary pedal to my set up is the volume pedal.

Here is an interesting link to the version info:

I'll have to check mine again.

Because I never liked it. I can't really figure out why I bought it in the first place. I think somebody talked me into it. I don't even know which model it is. I got it new in either the very late 70's or early 80's I think. I don't know, it was a long time ago and it's just been sitting in a box with my UniVox SuperFuzz and late 70's Dr. Q and some more crap I never use.

Do they go particularly well with a specific type of amp? All I think I've ever used it with is my old tube Vibro Champ, and like I said, I didn't care for it. Does it do something special with SS amps, or going direct or something?

i like it with tube amps but thats all i play so who knows. check the first foo fighters album for some good rat tones.

It seems the Marshall should already have that sound built in already for the most part-unless its on of those MG models

Judging by that chart

I think mine would be the 'third issue/fourth issue' one (fourth down in the list).

Cephus, I'll have to try your settings out. What are you using it with (pickups and amp)? I'm sure you've said plenty of times, but I don't exactly keep track of most people's setups.

I wonder how well that would work in front of my Brick? I'll have to try it out. Now if I can just figure out how to get my wife out of the house for a while. ;)

No chance in this weather.

I use stratty guitars with stock single coil pickups. I play most of the time using the middle pickup. I used it for a long time in front of my old peavey classic which was only half tube. I think that the Rat doesn't sound so hot when it's really distorted. They sound best when you're going after that almost clean/almost dirty edge.

Hmm

Good info. I thought guys liked it for metal-type distortion, which may explain why I didn't like it. I was trying to use it for the wrong thing. I'll have to give it another shot. So are you trying to get all the grit with just the Rat, and keep the amp really clean, or a little grit from both?

I set my amp super clean. I play rockabilly stuff, so I need that peavey ear-splitting clang. the tone is still pretty clean, but i get some sustain and a little slop. I ain't les paul, ya know.

In all fairness, you can dial in a pretty neat Tony Iommi snarl with it as well.

I always thought it was too mushy when I turned up the distortion. I actually use a distortion+ in front of the rat to get my snarl.

What kind of PUs get snarl from the rat?
