Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater.Other than them i can't really think of to many other bands that came out of the 1990's that really influenced me or blew me away.Most of the So-Called alternative band's or "grunge bands" pretty much all sounded the same to me..Dave Matthews Band is one of the few exeptions though,don't think anyone else sounded quite like them.
 
Jimmy Chamberlain is my pick. As for the siamese dream issue, in interviews for Zwan (he and billy corgans new project) the two of them are creditted as the authors of all the siamese dream material. Everytime I hear the smashing pumpkins, It makes me never want to try to play the drums again...
Also, I think Josh Freese (The Vandals, Perfect Circle) deserves a mention. hes a fantastic drummer, and I believe was the most requested studio drummer of the past few years. his credits are impressive...

Tim Alexander - ex drummer of Primus...he is great! Brain their drummer now isnt too bad, he has managed to keep some of Tim Alexanders drumming style (especially live) but just doesnt quite cut it i dont think...

Also, as Dr_Sbaitso said, Josh Freese...He's an awesome drummer, and he has played with a shitload of bands playing heaps of different music...
 
I agree with C Hugo

Mike Portnoy has got to be one of the best drummers.
 
I'd also have to totally agree with Dr_Sbaitso, Josh's work in APC was pretty damn good, aside from the extreme overcompression on almost all the tracks.:D And i've finally realized why i like the pumpkins so much, Jimmy just hits the hell outta those drums and it's great AND I gotta give him cred for having a mullet and a set of pink drums when they first started out, now THAT'S original.
 
Whoever plays for the Cherry Poppin' Daddies... I love that stuff. Maybe not the best, but easily my favorite of the 90's.

Guns n' roses is not metal. They're a rock band. They've never been a metal band. Metal at the time was bands like Metallica, Megadeth, etc. Where have you been?

My pick: William Calhoun of Living Colour. Technically he's a late 80's drummer, but I couldn't resist. He was just rad live.


I wish I could say Portnoy...because I love Dream Theater, but that guy tends to fuck up the dynamics of a lot of the songs (I have flamebait written all over me for that comment, don't I?). Sometimes he's great and other times he's just overdoing it. Not added to a song or even a part, but actually distracting from it. But I do love Dream Theater.
 
Danny Carey is amazing. Listen to the drums on Lateralus. He is a percussion god. Listen to the fill at the beggining of Sober. I still can't do that fill. Anyway, he's amazing. I would rank the 311 guy very high too, but not best. He has a very "marching band" approach to drumming, its cool but odd. Everyone has forgotten about the Dave Mathews band drummer. He is absolutely awesome too. I think those guys are certainly in my top 10 for the 90's

Joe Danials

You Know that guy from Local H. He carries the melody in that band.
 
Guy From Collective Soul is good too.... He uses alot of samples and loops on the albums, but I've seen him live and he is great..
