Ok....... Best 90's Drummer

I think the guy from Blink is simply great and extremely underrated. He does a lot considering the shit he's fed (actually, to their defense, I do like their stuff, but I'll acknowledge the fact that its not innovative). The guy's fills are just as good as they come.

Guy from Tool, Dave Matthews, and Mike Portnoy are all tied for #1 in my book.

I guess my breakdown is this:

Tied for #2: Chad (311) and Travis (Blink)
Tied for #1: Danny Carrey, DMB, Mike Portnoy

Last thought: I TOTALLY and WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with whomever said that Dave Grohl sux! I would totally say he's one of the most overrated drummers ever! Don't ge me wrong, the guy 'did the job' for Nirvana, but there was no unusual skill or remarkable signature present. Some praise the fact that he 'hits hard' - there's much more to good drumming than that.

Amen to that brother!!!!

Damon Che from Don Caballero

I feel like a broken record sometimes, but he's that good IMO.

Latest Issue of TapeOp

I threw out a relatively obscure name, and three days later received the new issue of TapeOp in which he is referred to "phenomenal." Some kind of karma at work there. Too bad this wasn't on the TapeOp forum.

I haven't read this whole thread, so forgive me for repeats...

Tim Alexander (Primus, formerly)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Josh Freese (a thousand different things)
Carter Beauford (DMB)
Sean Reinert (Death, Cynic, others)

Amen to the guy that said Jerry Gaskill - definitely deserves more recognition than he gets. If you haven't seen King's X live you don't know the half of it.

Dave Grohl may not have done anything very impressive on drums but I don't think there's anything wrong with what he did. He played what the music required. In case you didn't notice, EVERY instrument part in every Nirvana song was incredibly simple. The band was obviously not about skilled musicianship.

the drummer from nomeansno his name is john wright the band is not famous but they do tour the world and make a living out of their art.he is my favorite drummer. check out the album 0+1=2 the last song joyful reunion has the best tom/kick work for my money.Having seen them live 3 times he is the best I have seen.
but I am a meat and potatoes drum type man.though this one is from 89 their album WRONG is a killa

Baddest of the 90's

I'm not too blown away by most 90's bloomers.
Most of the greatest came before that. But if I had to
choose a few. Jimmy definitely has chops. Danney's
got em' too. Mike has taken chops a bit further than
most of them, but still can't quite smoke a top Fusion
guy. I'm looking for an ultimate Fusion, Rock do it all
dude who got big in the 90's. Doesn't seem to be anyone.
Because the 90's seem to divert from virtuousity and
finesse. Perhaps that's what I'm missing.

Nice call...Chad Smith from the Chili Peppers has perhaps the best innate sense of funk in the business... He and Flea make perhaps the best rhythm section since John Paul Jones and Bonham.

Someone listen to "Mind Riot" off of Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger (polyrhythms galore) and tell me Matt Cameron is not the best.
He does it all greatlyest AND it rocks superhard.

I will also vote for John Wright. His brother plays bass like a demon as well. They rule. I particularely like 0+2=1.

OK, let me put an end to this.

Karen Carpenter was the best drummer of all time! End of discussion.

Plus, she could play while wearing a dress.

Actually...

Karen Carpenter was a very good drummer.

And not too many people know she was a Jazz-Trained Drummer as well. I have heard a few snippets of her playing some Jazz, and she holds her own just fine.

If you really wanna go for the female drummer joke, look no further than Gina Shock, who was always seen mouthing out the "1-2-3-4" in her head while keeping the beat.

And the worst Drummer of all time?

And a great website to boot!

Frank Beard of ZZ Top completely blows.
Like listening to the Drum Machine on my Radio Shack Keyboard.

Oh..My Pick...If you are looking for the most influential drummer of the 90's in rock, I'd say Tommy Aldridge.
But because great Drummers were still recording in the 90's, just not as profilic, I'd say Billy Cobham.

A little word here...All the greatest Drummers of all time are Jazz Drummers.

And the worst Drummer of all time?....
Holy shit that's bad! I suppose some might call it arty or avant garde or some shit, but it just plain sucks.
All the greatest Drummers of all time are Jazz Drummers.
I think that's a bit disengenuous. How about: the greatest drummers of all time happen to be able to play jazz.

I don't know guys - I tend to disagree with Jazz being sometype of special indicator of ability. I don't particularly like jazz, but I can definitely appreciate the musicianship it requires. Still, I'm not sure whether Jazz alone is a critical variable in determining good drummers.

Moreover, I don't think it takes a great drummer to play jazz either. I'm sure it takes a great drummer to play 'great' jazz, but that can be said about anything, rock included. Any descent drummer can hold up a jazz riff if he needed to or wanted to...

BTW - Where do you guys think Max Weinberg fits in? I'm curious about him - haven't heard him outside of Conan O'Brien (though I am aware he played for Bruce Springstein).

Bombastic Beats

Here's a few;
Igor from Sepultura Andy Whale from Bolt Thrower...good driving beats...
Abe Cunningham from Deftones...
and just reiterating...Danney Carrey
