Would anyone agree that the guy from Blink 182 is really good? He really holds that group together and is the reason they are considered a legit "band".

hmmm.....well....I think that he's a good drummer......but the reason that they are considered a 'legit band'???? I don't know about that...

how about that fact that they write catchy tunes that appeal to the MTV masses? maybe that has something to do with them being a legit band???

maye I'm not getting your point?? what really is a 'legit' band anyway??

Travis Barker (Blink) is a decent drummer. He's much better than their previous drummer. He's not someone I would ever look to for inspiration, but I think the impression we get of his playing is somewhat limited to the context we hear him in - cheezy punk pop, how much can you do with that?

Danny Carey is amazing.
I'm glad somebody else realizes this. ;)

jimmy chamberlain and igor cavalera.
also that guy in the dave mathews band is awesome.

drummers

Matt Cameron is probably one of my favorite drummers around, but if you guys havent seen Brant Bjork play, you have no idea what you are missing out on.

i've only seen brant on video, and sure, he's a hard hitter...but i think if you listen to the later kyuss stuff and the earlier qotsa stuff you'll find alfredo hernandez was the better of the two kyuss drummers (IMO)

Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band)
Tim Alexander (PRIMUS)

Has anyone ever seen any of the Dave Matthews Band DVD's or Carter Beauford's instructional video. In addition the drummer from the Matthew Good Band (Ian Robert Browne) is nothing too fancy but he is a SOLID drummer both live and in studio.

My pick: William Calhoun of Living Colour. Technically he's a late 80's drummer, but I couldn't resist. He was just rad live.

I'll second that. Saw the dude twice and he kicked my ass without mercy both times!

Carter Beuford (DMB) gets my vote. Most of the alterna-metal-rock drummers aren't really doing anything that blows me away. But I'm an old guy. 31....

Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche) would get a little consideration if late 80's counts.

Though I'm uncertain as to what 'alterna-metal-rock' is, I think you should give Danny Carey a listen.

I don't know why but suddenly the name Jerry Gaskil popped into my head. Maybe the "late eighties" thing. Very under-rated I think.

JOSH FREESE!!

Check out this guys resume:

Chances are there's at least one album you've listened to and gone "Wow, that drummer rocks!!"

Amazing technical drummer and hard hitter!! If you get a chance to check out some live footage by The Vandals, you can watch this guy go ape!

Also, I don't think Danny Carey has been mentioned enough in this thread.

I saw him when he played with Devo at Lollapalooza '97. I didn't concentrate much on what he was doing, though, because I was overwhelmed at the idea of seeing Devo--I've been a huge fan since I was three years old and I never thought I'd actually get to see them.

Also, Tool went on before them. Danny Carey blew me the hell away. I didn't think he'd play all the parts from Aenima so precisely.

Why is it nobdy's mentioned one of the most recorded drummers of the 90's Vinnie Colaiuta. His chops are great. His sense of time just unbeleiveable. Plays rock, Jazz, Fusion, pop, you name it.

Prog Rock - Mike Portnoy
Metal - Vinny Paul. Did anyone like Machine Head's first album, burn my eyes?? Chris Kontos - extremely powerful thrash drumming.
Carter Beauford from DMB.
Primus' drummer, awesome, very unique.
Overall, Danny Carey posseses all of the good things about drumming, i think. He's the most delicate, the most rangeful, the most aggressive when he wants to be, and the most unique. best from the 90's.
and Dave Lombardo became famous in the 80's guys. Hell Awaits was 87. that album got everyone's attention, but Seasons is their best, relased in 90. he was out of Slayer by 92, they picked up Paul Bostaf.

lol, and Dave Grohl sux. he's a little beat keeper. Nirvana might as wel have just used a metronome.
i suggest everyone to try to pick up Burn My Eyes by Machine Head. It's their only good album and it's because Chris Kontos left the band right after it. It is some of the most aggressive metal drumming i have ever heard. better than Vinny Paul, better than dave lombardo. amd when it comes to thrash metal, better than dave lombardo is damn near impossible.

You're right. I don't think of him as a '90s drummer because I only know his Zappa work, and he left that band in 1980, but the stuff he does on Zappa records is in-credible.

I think Barker is by far the best 90's drummer I have heard...I really can't stand his band, but after listening to you guys, I downloaded a few blink songs, and he is simply amazing...I downloaded a song called "Aliens Exist" it was a live song and it was unbelievably awesome. Now I know why that band is together. Travis Barker is the glue, man.

Back to Vinnie for a second. To see what he's done in the 90's check his web page. http://www.brucegertz.com/vinniecolaiuta/index.html
His work with Sting in the 90's should speak for it's self. All Grammy winning stuff. He's played on so many records. He is to me what Hal Blaine was in the 60's and 70's. And if anyone here doesn't know the Hal Blaine story please do your self a favor as a student of drumming and look him up. He played on about 150 Billboard top 10 records. Well ove 300 top 40 hits. Just an amazing amount of music. His groove was legendary.
