First time on the board, please be patient. I've got a home rig (3 VS-880's, Ensoniq ASR-10, Roland D-10, Roland JV-2080, E-mu Vintage Keys, Aphex 104, Behringer Composer Pro, dbx 48-point patch bay, connected to a PC running Cakewalk). Before I added the Behringer to my rig, I didn't really notice any noise. Now, when I turn on the compressor and up the output, I hear the distinct hum coming through the mixer. I've tried hum-frees tabs on the rack, separating the mixers to another power outlet, plugging things in and out, but to no avail. When I crank up the volume on the VS-880, I can still hear the hum even if it's the only thing turned on. I'm assuming at this point that I've just got dirty power. Would a power conditioner help this situation or is there some other possibility? If so, what would you recommend? They way it is now, my compressor is practically worthless. The only way I've been able to supress most of it during "quite" sections in the music is to set the gate up to something like -40db, which cuts off my cymbals way to soon (imho). Any suggestions are welcome!!

I think I've narrowed this down to the balanced inputs/outputs on the composer pro. I didn't notice the hum until I hooked up the compressor. If I unplug that guy, the hum goes away. I've ordered some TRS cables to try my theory. They cost more, but you can never have too many cables :) Thanks for the suggestion. I think I may have a problem with the patch bay, too. The dbx bay has the cards that you can switch to denormalled and normalled just by flipping them over. The problem is, if you miss the jack with the plug, you can scrape right across the card. That'll be the next step.

Just a guess: you may have a bad wire. I've had 1/4 inch plugs deteriorate just by hanging at an angle.

One day I turned on my system and put on the headphones and, Voila, HUMMMMMMMM. I took each connecting cable and jiggled it gently until I found one that would suddenly go quiet, then when moved, the hum was back.

Check all of your connectors and see.
