the software is the dell webcam software and i can select the audio source from withing the webcam centre software but what im thinking is will i be able to select the usb samson mic from the audio source tab so i will just have to do what im doing now to record my videos but with better audio quality hopefully

Looks like you'v found your own answer...if the Samson is chosen as the source then it SHOULD appear. Suggest u look in pref/options for the audio device and verify that it has some sort of selection procedure, if yes then i rekon you'd be able to.

Maby we are long lost twins mate who knows im guessing im the better looking one though:) Are you scottish by any chance

aye but only a wee bit and I'm not telling which bit ...no seriuosly have maternal and paternal scot relies so am a mixed mongrel ha

Ya but im thinking being usb will this appear in the audio source or will the round jack plugs only appear there

Is the h2 not a usb mic also i thought it said something about usb anyway
Specs state USB interface with audio interface function.. darrin is also impying that the mic can be used as such.
BUT don't get confused by thinking why are same neg to usb mic and this h2 is good ..2 seperate issues some very very good sound cards interface with comp useing usb.. the thing with the mic is the usb is contained within the mic and specs not so good but I am sure will be fine for wot u want...many thousands of folks are happily useing them..but if I were to spec a high qual semiPro system would go other routes AND bigger budget...COMPROMISES

To the above, last good point that i can't answer 100% as i don't know the S/W..check help/manual see if any indication...EXTERNAL mic kinda thing also check web site but I would have thought that a decent bit of S/W would...oh is it dedicated to that hardware, if not it should see any appropriate device connected including alternative camera again see doco

I'll check wiv you l8r gotta do things I've sent u a PM as were going off thread a bit so check 4 it

I tend to avoid USB mics because they have no resale value.

That being said, the X-Fi is what a $100-ish soundcard. You're going to completely bypass that *cough* "quality" for a 10$ USB soundcard (the USB part of a USB mic). Not saying that it's bad, but you could probably do better.

As far as video and audio capture on a computer. My TV card has a CD-audio connector for audio. My current (more modern) motherboard doesn't even have a CD-audio connector. So I have to pipe it through a VCR(pre capture) to get audio. And since both(video and audio) are being recorded on separate devices there is a bit of latency. Audio is roughly 0.164 seconds early. Without compensating for that in the recording process. Good enough for stand up, but no so much for a night at the symphony.

If you can take the computer out of the middle, you might get better results(less work in post). You don't really need the computer there unless you're recording/broadcasting live or something. At which point a lot of cams have outputs that you can use with capture devices to get a computer feed in addition to the video devices own recording abilities. I tend to stick with TV capture cards, since recording time is limited by drive space, not battery life. Assuming some form of power tether. But it really depends on your video source. Webcams don't have that great of sensors, even now. Many use higher end camcorder to feed video, since better video has less noise and compresses better for live chats / video conferencing and the likes. Something which most low end webcams do NOT excell at.

Im sorry...I didnt know that quality wasnt an issue...just about any mic should do fine...if you dont care about video...why care about audio...plenty of Vloggers just use onboard laptop mics.

Oh quality is an issue mate thats why im wanting a mic maby i should just find a way of recording audio and video away from the computer and then transfer the file to the pc any ideas there? At least then i wouldnt be stuck getting a usb mic which everyone here hates so much. Any ideas

try this

I bought a mic from this site called www.editorskeys.com, have been using it constantly since and its actually amazing, I get perfect vocal recordings every time! Is nice and crisp on its own but also picks up the sound from my guitar really well. I bought the SL300 but they have a cheaper one as well, probs just as good!

Also just bought a pop filter from them too, pretty cheap and works really well with the booth.

Definitely give them a go.

Forget USB. Your existing soundcard will sound better.

You can buy an inexpensive 2-channel mixer with phantom power and a headphone amp for $50.

Buy a single condenser for for less than $50. I happen to think the Naiants are a great bargain.

Later you can buy an additional mic and record the guit with one mic and your vox with the other.
