I'm talking here about The Bongos
http://www.myspace.com/thebongos
The song is Numbers with Wings which unfortunately isn't on their Myspace page. What I want to know is how did they get that serious AIR in the recording?
It sounds to me like a huge amount of brite reverb on the entire mix and serious EQ on the 12 string guitar.

Now the real question is, how do I get that air or atmosphere?
I usually limit my reverb at 3K and any higher it begins to hurt. Somehow The Bongos found a way to use tons of brite reverb in a way that I really like. I just can't make it work myself.

Am I out in the wind here? Does anybody here know of this song?

Answers are appreciated either way. :)

I would like to post a clip of this song so people might see what I am talking about. Is there any legal thing that says I can be sued for posting say a 15 second clip of this song?

Well here is the clip anyway. http://www.somnium7.com/sunrise/nww_clip.wav

I'll take it down tomorrow to be safe. It's a .wav (8 Meg) because mp3 encoding just trashes the atmosphere of the song.

Sounds like real nice OH recordings, a bit too high endy on the cymbals, but thats only becuase there is a big gap in the mix. Not much low end really, so the hi hats seem to grab my attention straight from the start. Stereo hats, nice!

So Id say alot of the fact it sounds "airy" is becuase there isnt much else in the mix.
Im not a fan of this style of mixing, but I suppose it works for the tune.

Maybe the person mixing had tinnitus. I like to listen to this song with the bottom three bands of my graphic EQ boosted a little.

I also get the impression there is a room mic picking up the drums from a short distance. Anybody else hear this?
