FWIW... :)
Here's my studio kit that I recorded yesterday; The drummer is a friend.

The kit was mic'd with:
  • Kick - D112
  • Snare - SM57
  • Tom 1 and Tom 2 - SM57
  • Floor Tom - D112
  • Overheads - NTK

If you want to hear it then take a listen to
.

The first half, ~23sec, is the kit totally dry as recorded and the second half is after some EQ, Compression and Reverb.

Here's some pictures of the Kit as recorded:

Hey bud,Is that cloth draped over the rack to keep it from rattling? If it is cool thing to remember{those tend to get harmonic}!I will download later and give a listen..

Nice shit, my man!!

Very smooth on the top end....those NTK are nice. I got one but havent used it on drums yet. I didnt like it much on guitar though I only tried it once....wasnt right for the tune was more the trouble. I DID use it on my bass players big SVT bass cab and I liked it a lot....went through my HHB Radius 40w/ a touch of comp and just tiny boost to the high end (this was because the bass sound itself was a little lacking in the highs and I was lazy since I only needed a little:D )

So give us a little more info....what was the signal chain after the mics.....recording format? Board? Track w/EQ or comp?

C'Mon man!!!:p

Liking the whole deal....bastard....making me want another NTK!!

My girlfriend will hate you and I'm telling her it's YOU too...hell hath no fury like a woman with a gear slut boyfriend:D

yea...the rack is fairly old and i've found this really quieted the noise level of the kit.

hey man, the kit sounds very nice! Did you notice a big difference in the overheads by using the ntk's instead of a sm condenser?

-daniel

what's a SM condenser?

here's the list of mics that i've used as overheads in the last year:

NT-1 - Didn't like these at all...not enough air and a bit harsh

4033 - Liked these and are now my second choice

4050 - Liked these but prefer 4033's

C1 - never used in production but experimented...don't like them as overheads

NTK - my preference right now on my kit...but will try/compare the 4033's before deciding.

i do think the NTK is a bit smoother than the 4033

hey, sorry about the typo.
i meant small diaphragm condender SD, not SM.
lol

daniel

i thought you meant SD...

probably the closest to SD's are the 4033's. i like the 4033 and use it a lot. IMO, it's a bit darker than the NTK...

i have a pair of the at 4041's...are they close to the sound of the 4033's? I have never heard the 4033 and the 4041 close up.

-daniel

I currently use the 4033's as overheads. They do work out well....very smooth as well. So far my favorite.

This is interesting ... seems a lot of people use LD condensers for overheads ... I was under the impression SD condensers were best for this.

In what instances would you choose LD and in what instances would you choose SD condensers? Is it not really dependent on circumstance but rather a sound preference, like wanting to pick up more room? And if that's the case, why LDs instead of omnis?

I know, lots of questions ... sorry! But any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks.
