Hammond DR-20 Reverb Tank | eBay

I found an article for a DIY reverb in an 1950 something Popular Electronics. The project is vague on the electronics, referencing a "driver coil" with no other description. I guess this is kinda what they had in mind....

As far as I remember the reverb tank in a Hammond tone cab is usually bathed in oil as to provide damping for the springs, still pretty impressive

The early Hammond tanks were oil damped.p you could tune there performance with oil level and viscosity. Later they moved to a dry system. Both have been robbed for other (non organ) uses.

Wow cool stuff-- oil and all
I just remember Grams' dedicated Hammond extension box, three springs hung in a 24" or so arch.
So I'd be like 12 being told not to be 'poking around in there

Damn. Early 'Hammond' experience as 'entry level toxin' :D
