It's sad, but True and Chater-La seem to be content to let this community die on the vine. Why not simply be honest and close the whole site?

Just another guy, really.
I am no apologist for the owners and mods of this group, but it seems to me that the larger threat to this, or any other forum, is members who have gotten it into their heads that they can do whatever they want, in the forum. Violate the TOS, openly defy the rules when they are made aware of their infractions thereof, get down right shitty with other forumites, whatever- some people assume an "I can do whatever the hell I want, and no one can do anything to stop me" attitude, and it develops into about the worst disease a forum can contract. Senior members get tired of the off-topic bickering and leave, intermediate members find themselves drawn to take sides and unintentionally fan the flames, and noobs wonder what the heck they said to get blasted and don't come back.

I am not sure which of those groups I fit in- I think of myself as an intermediate, both in activity and knowledge. I do know I was drawn into a couple of truly stupid arguments, not long ago, and a wiser forum member (Lt. Bob) "took me aside" and basically said "Look here, you are being as much a dick as those other guys, and other people are starting to notice. Knock it off, for your own good, so you don't lose the friends you still have." It was good advise, and I am glad I took it. Since then, I have tried to adhere to the following personal rules of behavior:

Base my comments on gear or procedures from my own experiences- as an example, I comment only on amps I have owned for a while and played several times, not just once or twice.

Avoid extrapolating to other gear that, on the surface, appears to be similar (same brand, etc.)

If someone post a review or comment that I don't agree with, I try to remember to ask "Really?" instead of calling them out on it. I try to keep in mind that I was not there at the time- perhaps some factor contributed to their experience that was not present for me.

I have sworn off getting into tit-for-tat arguments. (And I hope I can stick to that one!)

Personally, I think the bans that have recently taken place were about as justified as they could have been. And good grief, putting on a disguise and coming back in, to make more trouble, is just stupid. If Lt. Bob had not talked (or slapped) some sense into me, I'd probably have been banned, too. I have nothing to base this on except a hunch, but I suspect Bob may have had a similar woodshed conversation with others- it appears some didn't heed the warnings. Oh, well. I guess some folks just need a firmer hand to get the picture.

Some here are trying, for all they are worth, to be malcontents- I gotta tell you, it's unbecoming and counterproductive. They seem to have no idea how good you have it here- I have seen forums that had freakin' Nazis for owner and mods. The rules there were different for some members than others, and some were not even publisized. Bad behavior was tolerated, sometimes even encouraged, for some, while dissent was squashed. Forum members were often reminded that the forum was privately owned, and the owners could do what every they damn well wanted to- and frequently did. I visited one such forum last night, btw, and found there isn't much left there, anymore.

Things are not perfect here- maybe not even nearly as good as they could be. But this "place" has the potential to get better- dissent is allowed, most criticism is answered, peer pressure is (often enough) used in a constructive and mostly positive manner, and from my observation, someone only gets thrown out when they get WAY out of control. There are some darn good posts on this forum by most if not all the people who are currently unhappy- perhaps it is a good time for us all to give some thought to why we came here, in the first place, and decide why we are here, now. If the reasons are different, so be it- but it might be helpful for us each to "know ourselves" a bit, so that we know a little better what we can contribute and take from this forum.
