Not a newbie, but the question is

I have been recording for some time, but have been disappointed by most of what I've done. If I wanted to start over with a new recording software, which one would you guys recommend? I have been using "Sonar Producer Edition", but it has way too many features for me and I get overwhelmed quickly.

I am just looking for a basic software (preferably on the cheaper side) that I has a small learning curve, and I could produce demos on.

Any thoughts?

Sonar 6.0 PE is the latest software I tried and it was awesome. Sure it has billions of features but I only need to use a few. My friend Mike just bought it and we're starting to download all our old ADAT tapes into it so we instantly have mixing tracks to play with. I'm picking it up maybe end of the year or next year, money permitting :rolleyes::rolleyes:;);)

I have been using Sound Forge Studio 6.0 as my computer program. It is only 2 track. I mix down my ADAT 8 tracks to it through a mixer. It's about as simple as it gets especially since it's 2 track. It has lots of mix down stuff like volume, eq, effects, compressor, normalizing etc etc but with a very simple interface and controls. It cost $99.

There's lots of others out there and people with experience with other packages. Reaper, Adobe Audition, Cubase, PT .... Hopefully they will chime in with their opinions... :D

It doesn't get much cheaper than $40, which is the shareware fee for http://reaper.fm/. Once you pay the fee you are entitled to all upgrades until the software reaches v. 2.0.

You can use as much or as little of this program as you need for any single project. If you want to use it just as a simple multitrack you can do that --- if you want to explore all the options including the midi editing and flexible plugin routing you can do that too.
