normal hiss from distortion

how do I eliminate normal hiss from a distortion? i know its kind of an old issue but i tried to search the whole forum and cant find any answers.
 
The 2 things that I do, are turn down the unwanted high-range in the eq...also use a gate to shut down the signal.
 
Try a thinish EQ cut at 5K ish. If this doesnt work them maybe a more broad cut but not as big a cut at around 1-2K. SHould do the trick, but you really want to get the hiss eliminated before recording.
