Hello, I am an old fogey who used to do some analog recording with the old cassette tape 4 tracks. I have been out of the recording habit for quite a while, but am a mild computer nerd and want to get into Dig recording on my desktop. My style in the past was dubbed New Age Folk, if there is such a thing  , and I used alot of track overlays in my recording (usually to the chagrin of the sound quality). I just built a system sans sound card, specs:

Abit IC7 Motherboard 2.8Ghz 800 Mhz Frontside bus capable with 5.1 sound built in. ( only one line in, and one mic)

200 Gig HD fast with 8 MB cache

512 MB 2700 RAM

DVD and CD burners

multiple Firewire and USB 2.0

21" Flat panel

I have electric, acoustic electric guitars, an old Roland alpha Juno 1 Keyboard that is midi capable, mics, a peavey KB amp, an old Yamaha RX8 rhythm programmer and an old effects processor.

Now  my questions are:

1) does anyone have any suggestions on a good interface between my intruments (voice) and my system? Also, I would like to be able to connect more than 2 inputs at a time. Should I get a medium to high end sound card or can i just use something through my firewire or USB (or both)?

2) Cubase or Cakewalk

3) Also want to make sure that once I figure out MIDI, I will have that feature available to me.

I hope I have not gone cross topic too much, and I appreciate any opinions the more experienced have. As a note: I am think of spending in the $500 to $800 range (give or take)

Thank you in advance,
Brent
