well here we go folks...

i was at guitar center today and took a trip to the keys section of the store...
a room full of keyboards and synths- it was awesome, anyways...
i sat there for half an hour playing an m-audio axiom 25 key midi controller
hooked up to a computer using some software with a moog synth on the screen generating ultra awesomely great sounds from the 25 key i was playing... im a complete noob when it comes to anything dealing with midi, i've tried to read about it but i dont have the attention span to get through enough to understand it. i guess what im asking is...

1) how was the axiom 25 hooked up to the computer (midi out>mixer>soundcard?)(midi out>soundcard midi in?)(any other way?)

2) my mixer and soundcard have no midi in's, how much would it cost to get something from point A to B?

3) what are some good software programs that are able to generate authentic synth sounds - prices?

thanks in advance guys, i know these are incredibly stupid questions, but help me out here, im interested =)

and i now see that the axioms are usb compatible as well...
scratch 1 and 2?

There many and they span both the quality and price ranges (from free to hundreds of dollars)

Generally, they will run standalone but usually are run from inside a sequencer running as a host so you can record what you are playing.

Good sequencer (free to try): http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

Loads of free/shareware/demo instruments (VSTi is a common format for them btw) : http://www.kvraudio.com/

The reissue moog plug in you tried is probably the arturia mini moog
