Noise with Midi recording in Cubase Sx

I am using a freeware softsynth with an Audiophile 2496 with Cubase Sx, and i get crackling noises when i record. There are none when i play without recording, but as soon as I hit record, there is definite cracking. Any suggestions? Please help.

Every once in a while, when I am working with a soft synth I will get a single "crackle" in my monitoring, but when on playback it is clean and wasn't recorded. Since the playback is fine I don't really care about it.

If your real concerned you can look a bit down the page to a thread "Is more RAM all I need" or something to that effect. There are suggestions for removing crackles, recorded and otherwise, that might help you. The problem with clicks and pops is that there are a zillion things that apparently can cause them so chasing down the one that is affecting you could be tricky.

You should be glad they are not the kind that get recorded on the track! :D

Maybe a latency issue - more ram could solve it, but you might try settling for a little more latency...

...but what I do (in 5.1) is pull my latency all the way down for record, then push it back up to normal for playback. so the pops and clicks are there when I'm recording, but not on playback, and I don't have timing issue when I record.

Mmmm... cracks only when you hit record... Correct me if I am wrong but can it be due to a low speed of the HD?
 
If it's only happening with this softsynth then it's probably the synth and it's reaction with crescendopes system and not the HD's, or else he would be having crackles with all of his recordings.

My system runs (knocks on wood :D ) perfectly, and I have plenty of oomph in my system (1.9 ghz P4 w/ 1 gig ram) and I have noticed with certain VSTI's and VST effects *note: they are ALWAYS free ones* that I can get clicks in recording that don't show up on the file and they export fine.

by theh way, i am now finishing the setup on my new PC: PIV 2.4, 1 Gb ram, Intel chipset. i just wanted to change the ram, and I ended buying the wole thing, because of some uncompatibilities on my motherboard. I am happy ´cause SX runs nice and smooth , except when I apply one free plug-in called DEF Compressor. It´s like if you drop a bomb in the middle of the track. I tell you just in case.

Thank you for your help so far guys, but the problem is still there. The crackle DOES get recorded with the track. It works fine with audio, but screws up the midi. I am running P3 1.0 GHz with 256 ram, and I've never had problems before. Please give me some more suggestions. Thank you.
 
Also, I get the crackle even when I use the A1 synth that comes with Cubase SX, so I guess its not the soft synth after all....
 
Only during MIDI recording?? I haven't heard of that before.

When your recording MIDI have you turned on your VST System Resources box? Are there any spikes when the clicking happens?
 
The crackle is only during midi recording, and there are no "spikes" or whatever. Someone mentioned something about having a bad chipset on my mobo. I'm sure i'm not the only one out there with this problem. I'm using an HP computer with 256 ram. Maybe I should look into a new mobo. Any ideas???
 
I have never heard of a motherboard having trouble with MIDI. MIDI is controlled by your soundcard and/or midi controller/interface, not your motherboard.

I would suggest testing your MIDI cables and make sure that they are not the problem. Check your instruments MIDI out ports and make sure they are clean.

I'm not at my setup so I can't poke around the MIDI settings for you, but I would look there and see if there are any settings or buffering for MIDI that could be adjusted to help your system.
