Noise Reduction!?!?

Hi all,first post.

I have a problem, when i record raw unedited audio, theres noise right, in cool edit and Audacity, noise reduction works perfect, no hiss. Now, I just bought myself Adobe Audition 3 and downloaded Audacity Beta, when i try to use noise reduction in Adobe Audition 3 and Audacity beta, the hiss is still there!!, like only 70% of it gets reduced, the wave is flat but theres still noise on that certain area, this is killing me!!, because I use Dynamics to boost my acapellas,then noise reduction, and the noise reduction in Audition is EXCATLY the same as in cool edit pro. Did I just waste my money coz now im back to using cool edit pro, without a proper noise reduction my work is useless, is there something in these new programs causing this?. i want 100%hiss reduction like in cool edit and audacity, it does cause slight artifacts, but its not notable over the beat, my theory is, Adobe audition 3 and the new Audacity has something that prevents Artifacts, so to counter this, it leaves some hiss and noise to prevent artifacts, I need help on this, what can be the problem?!?!

Well, I think a better solution would be to get rid of the noise at the source.

First of all, what kind of noise is this? Background? Electrical hiss?

Next, what are your recording (vocals, guitar), and could you please describe your setup? (how long your cables are, you interface/mixer, etc.)

I am more than positive Adobe Audition has a noise removal tool. Just look up in the help documentation on how to use it.

Go to the help menu -- Adobe Audition Help, then search for what you need.

avoid using NR plugs whenever you can...they usually introduce more unwanted artifacts than they take out. Use it only in the instances when your ass needs to be saved. Ideally, any music studio where things can be monitored during the recording process, shouldn't be using NR.

its light standard hiss that gets boosted by the dynamics i use, but in cool edit pro,the same noise reduction tool thats in adobe audition 3,works perfect!, but when i use the same tool on adobe audition 3,it doesnt work, also the new audacity cant noise reduction propely but the old one can.

Assuming what you are getting is electronic hiss only and not room noise, you need to fix your front end.

Get your gain structure set so that the hiss doesn't come in because you (presumably) have to pump the living daylights out of some control to get enough volume from your mic.

At least based on how you describe it, it sounds like you need either a pre-amp for your mic, a new soundcard, or both. That way, you should be able to say goodbye to noise reduction.

if you are using the same plugins on each program, check to make sure you have the signal chain set up properly. i.e. source goes to NR then dymamics or however you had it set up before.

It would be your best bet to track down where the noise is coming from and eliminate it tho.

There is no such thing as light standard noise.
Record a minute with your usual chain but no signal - quiet empty room type thing.
Now repeat the above but with the usual start to your chain (guitar/mic etc) not connected.
repeat this sequence recording, saving & labelling the file until you are just recording from your soundcard with nothing plugged in.
Compare the files for noise & note if/when/where the noise isn't recorded anylonger. This should indicate where the noise is coming from.
If you get to just sound card & the noise is still there try recording blank with lights off, with power supplied by extension from another circuit etc.
If the noise is still there it's likely to be the soundcard. If it's a standard or gamers' card try recording in line in then mic in etc to see the diffs.

oh ok,thanks everyone for the help, in Adobe Audition 3, with noise reduction, i changed the FFT values from 4000 down to 1000 and now it works perfect like cool edit filters noise, the hiss cant be heard right after I record, untill i use dynamic compression, so yep, its perfect now, all noise gone without effecting the vocal quality, just needed to change the FFT values.

rayc i did try that, I use a soundblaster, its S/N ratio is not bad actually.

I have to bounce to work, thanks again to everyone, also i hope this gets searched up with anyone else who uses Audition 3 and noise reduction doesnt work propely lol, reduce the FFT Value!!
