Hi all, new and first post.

Im using acid pro 6, and i want to know how to get rid of the usual noise, hiss etc, I also have audacity and its noise reduction works a charm, but I hate switching programs back and forth, the noise gate in acid pro 6, or any noise gate for that matter, i downloaded some free noise gate VSTs, and their all similar, are noise gates any good for full hiss removal?

A noise gate is a noise gate. Any samples below the threshold get silenced, the rest pass untouched. A noise gate will certainll remove any hiss if you crank the threshold up high enough, but if you set it TOO high you'll end up removing quieter parts you want to keep. It depends on how loud the hiss is.

You might want to figure out the problem causing the noise and hiss. It shouldn't be a "usual" problem. Eliminating the source of the problem is a better solution.

In spite of what it sounds like, a noise gate really isn't very good for noise reduction. When the gate opens, all the noise is there. It can be useful for dealing with hum from a guitar amp when you're not playing. When you *are* playng, the music tends to cover up the noise. Gates are also commonly used to decrease mic bleed on a drum kit with a lot of mics on it. Getting the settings right is a pain, especially with drummers who are inconsistent. As noted above, the best answer to noise reduction is almost always to make less noise. Hiss is usually caused by faulty components or poor gain staging. The time to make noise go away is before you record it.-Richie
