Hi. I need some guidance on settings for applying a noise gate to female vocals on a home recording. I'm running a condenser mic with a pop filter through a pre-amp specifically for vocals (the Behringer UltraVoice VX2000) and then to a Yamaha 8 track hard disk recorder. I'm getting quite a bit of low-level rustling noise and hiss in the voclas. The noise gate options on the VX2000 are THRESHOLD (-40 to +10) and DEPTH (0 TO MEDIUM TO MAX). What do I use to get rid of the hiss and rustling? My instinct is to use -20 to -10 on THRESHOLD and then medium or just under medium for THRESHOLD. Any help is appreciated.

The noise gate will only be able to remove noise while there are no vocals. When it kicks in, it removes ALL signal. Often when it clicks on and off, you'll hear a clicky noise which can be just as annoying as the original rustling/hiss. Your best bet will be to remove the noise at the source; what is the source of the hiss/rustling? I found when I track acoustic guitar, I have to remove my watch, among other things to quiet the room down.
