Yes, whenever i tap the mic with my finger nail, there's sound, but whenever i talk into the mic, there's no sound

Can you record the tapping? Try recording your voice, the level might just be low

ok, I tried recording everything, but the wave line thing is flat. just flat even if I shout or tap it

I can't verify that you have phantom power. Have you tried a dynamic mic or an instrument of some sort?

1st: no
2nd: yes

If you play music on your computer, does the sound come out of the speakers connected to the Xenyx, or the headphones connected to the UCA222?

If you have a CD player or whatever with a headphone socket, turn it down real low and connect the cable from the headphone socket to the line in of the Xenyx and see if you can record it. Just seeing if an audio path has been established. I think that you may have to get friendly with the store you bought the mic from and exchange it for a dynamic of similar price

headphones connected to the UCA222 and i don't have a CD player :(

Any audio device, TV, DVD whatever... with a headphone output

Alternative to the mic, exchange the Xenyx for the next model up, the 802 I think, that definitely has phantom power, but will cost a bit more

Mackie makes a very similar mixer to the 502 that DOES have phantom power

that's what I was thinking about doing, going to the 802

Failing that, just connect the TSR cable to the line input of the Xenyx and touch the other end. That should produce some hum that you could record to verify that you have an audio path

If the store can verify that the 502 really doesnt have phantom power (and to be frank they dont always know their products that well) then it might fix your problem. The cheaper alternative of course is to exchange the condenser for a dynamic

What about an ipod?

For the amount of stuff you don't have, your career in recording is looking decidedly shakey!

so if there's a hum that means it's bad?

I have an iphone, will that work?
