This is going to sound completely gay, but stick with me...

I have ZERO opportunity to get enough quiet in my domicile to lay down vocal tracks. ZERO. If it's not kids, it's dogs, or the spousal unit or who knows what else.

SO, I was considering taking the iBook and my USB interface and a mic and doing them in my vehicle! How bad would that sound and how stupid is this?

I feel your pain. I'm in a fairly small 3 bedroom house with one bedroom acting as my "control room" and my daughter's bedroom/closet is my "tracking room."

However, my wife and daughter never freaking leave the house! Between them coming in the room every 5 minutes and the dog barking at anything that moves, I have a tough time doing any critical listening when they are home (and you can forget about tracking).

My best advice is to bribe your family. :D

It can be painful to your wallet, but tell the wife and kids to go shopping and see a movie. Give them money to go do something they enjoy and that will get them out of the house. Give the dog a nice (big) treat like a really good bone that will occupy him/her for a while.

As for tracking in the car... you never know until you try it. It might work, it might not. Cars are not the ideal acoustic environment (but neither are most homrec'rs "studios").

I had the same problem with my wife constantly entering the room while I was recording. Even after pleading with her not to do it.

I divorced her stupid ass!

Harsh? ummmm maybe

Effective? Yep!

I heard car's weren't that bad? Well, not as great as a studio, but hey...

You'll need a REAL long power chord or you won't get far. :D (I couldn't resist)

Doing it outside somewhere would be a lot better than in the car. Just find a relatively quiet spot perhaps next to a building, house, or something to shield you from the wind.

Assuming you don't live in an urban environment.

Dude, if his homelife is anthing like mine he gets no peace there either!

We settled it this way in our home:
Music Nights - two specific nights a week - no interruptions - door locked and closed - no friends over banging around upstairs. It works well! If there is a special project that I'm working on, I'll "negotiate" extra time.

Not sure if you are renting or if you own. But... my best advice is to pick
a closet you can work in then treat the walls. After you treat the walls,
it can double as an ISO booth and still be used as a closet.
It may be a pain in the ass to move the contents in and out, but the
results will be much better than the car idea. Oh yeah, you will need
a "punch in" pedal at least. Good luck.

In the state I live in, we’ve got very clear laws against recording while driving. :o

As gay as you think it may sound, I was thinking the same thing and I like the ladies if you know what I mean. I was driving to work last week and noticed how quiet it was in my Tahoe even with road noise. I got to thinking that I could drive over to an office park around the corner after everyone's gone home and record. I have a power converter and I track on my Zoom MRS1044 so I think it would work. It would also allow me to sing as loud as I want and not sound stupid to my wife who laughs at me when she hears me tracking harmonies and such.
I could be wrong but I think it's a good idea. It's worth a go anyway.

Could you imagine a real studio doing vocal tracks this way. "OK guys all the instruments are done, who wants to go on a field trip"? :D

"I'll negotiate", in married terms means, "I'll give up extra sex until I change his mind!";)

Give the wife something to do you know will take a long time and make sure she takes the kid.

marry a musician, that's what I did, she knows recording etiquette

Put the dogs in the yard and send the wife and kiddies to the movies... worked for me for years.

Please tell me you'll post pictures if you actually end up doing this(recording in the car)...especially when you get to micing the drums! :D
