No Fun

I focused mostly on the drums as I listened... one of my favorite things a drummer can do (when appropriate) is constantly hit a crash cymbal over and over so that it sounds like a "wall of crash".... where the cymbal sound is at a steady volume and you can't really hear the actual striking of the cymbal. I noticed it start at 1:07 and liked how it went until the end of the song. Never heard the original song, so if that was your own touch, good on you. Either way, song sounded great. My next question was going to be what kind of cymbal that was, but I see you mentioned it was a 20" crash/ride in the thread.

Hey wilko....if you come back to this.....

Here's a quick and crappy "Dougy Giro" :laughings:

Just did this one, just now, like literally just now. It's pretty bad. :laughings:

Crappy? This one is my favorite!!!

Thanks for checking it out. Yeah, that's a Paiste RUDE crash/ride. It's a very heavy, aggressive cymbal. I jokingly compare it to a manhole cover, but it aint far from the truth. Probably the loudest cymbal I've ever heard. But it does what it does very good - and that's go into a smooth steady wash that basically sounds like an endless sustaining crash if you do it right. I also prefer a nice ride wash over a bunch of isolated crash bashing. You can do it with just about any big cymbal though with the right technique. Play the body of the cymbal with the shoulder of the stick, stay away from the bell and edge, and use like a slight sweeping motion across the cymbal as you hit it. You'll be doing the wash.

Lol. Thanks jimmy. I don't know, it's not good. My vocals are terrible. I hate that damn Strat too. Drums and bass sound good to me though. I guess it's okay for a super-quicky.

I have just got home after having had a couple of shitty days and I have just listened to this!! I have tears of laughter and I was joining in on the chorus loudly.. it is fucking awesome! You have just made my day!

You almost got the accent too! Nice one, I am still chuckling!

"Wash" will be my word of the day... I never knew what the term for what I was describing was. I've tried for the wash myself often with my 18" crash, but could never sustain it for as long as I was trying to. Looks like the only thing I was doing right was using the shoulder of the stick. I'll try it your way. Thanks for the tip!

I checked amazon for the Paiste 20" RUDE crash/ride. That's the thing about amazon... right now I can't justify spending $300+ on a cymbal, but after some Friday night drinking tomorrow, I have a feeling there will be one on my doorstep come Wednesday! :)

Haha, well that's great, thanks a lot. I did some of the backups with my lame attempt at a british accent. Some of them are regular, some of them are faux brit. :laughings:

Lol. If you get that cymbal, it will immediately make the rest of your tin pies seem wimpy if they're not good quality. It's a bully. RUDE is an appropriate name for that entire lineup.

Doesn't matter. Olga is a Geordie (North East England) and that is a really tough accent to copy! Still, I loved the track and hope you do some more.

Aw Christ. That means next Friday I'll probably be ordering a whole set of Paistes. Somewhere along the line I need to learn to play these freakin' things! :)

Not sure a critique is necessary. It's really good. Mostly just listening for the enjoyment.

OK bring up the hand claps maybe? They're a little tough to hear. I suppose if you do that, they'll get in the way of the vocal?

The last couple of your mixes had a little heavier guitar tone. Or maybe it's just me?

ANyway, I liked it.

Yeah he has like a Scottish/English accent. It's crazy. I might give another a try.

Thanks Trip. I'm gonna address the claps when I go back into this mix. These amp settings aren't much different than what I usually go with. It might just be the way I played it.

guitars sound awesome
Cool, thanks Mick. :)

Great recording man!
I love the guitars....crunchy but not harsh. Also, nice job of interweaving 2 guitar parts to really give a great stereo image and really make the rhythm guitar pop. It just plain rocks 'nuff said. The wah sounds good too. I think all the levels are perfect and I love the fade.
You're giving me inspiration to get my recordings to a higher level.

I enjoyed the one. The hand claps were fun. If I was going to pick one thing I don't like it would have to be the fact that I can't pick something I don't like. Drums sound cool, guitars sound epic (but that's pretty much the regular for you). Vocals were awesome.

Damn good stuff dude.

Dougy is cool.
Thanks Ray. You're pretty familiar with the Toy Dolls, right?

Thanks a lot jimi. I'm flattered that you would say that. Just keep it simple dude. Properly record the sounds you actually want. No compromises. The rest is gravy.

Awesome, thanks for stopping in and checking it out. :)

To derail this thread. I wanted to post this pic for my buddy Greg. The awesome dude :D

Greg when you record these guitars are you micing an amp or getting this sound ITB? It always sounds so clean

Thanks a lot, I take great pride in doing everything real. Real drums, real guitars, real everything. These guitar tracks are 100 watt Marshall heads pounding the shit out of actual speaker cabs jamming soundwaves into real microphones. Honestly, there is nothing done to them ITB. This is exactly as they were recorded.
